Thomas Hawk reports that two services added video to their service offerings (Vizrea and Webshots). I talked with Webshots execs today and it sounds very cool. I’m off to check it out.
Stewart Butterfield, co-founder of Flickr, told me they are working on video too. So, it’ll be interesting to see which service really gets this right.
Why does this matter?
Because most digital still cameras now also do video. So, as people figure that out they’ll be looking for places to put their videos. Most probably have heard of YouTube so it’ll be interesting to see if these services can get people to post videos there instead of on YouTube or other video services.
It sounds a very exciting prospect

I will. Because I don’t have the need of posting video for millions people. I just want to share video to my friends and family. So posting video to Flick is very good idea. Having YouTube-like photoset display is also good idea.

Just wonderful. WebShots has been the bane of my group’s existence (there is no way to even estimate how many times we’ve had to remove the WebShots app–and the adware that mysteriously appeared–from our users’ PCs when they complained about slow performance), and now WS is branching out. What now? Resource-sucking video wallpaper and screensavers? Please excuse me if I don’t jump for joy.

Not just digital still cameras can do videos — many camera phone can as well.
Depending on what research report you read or what handset vendor you speak to, there are 1 billion camera phone around the world now, or there will be in 2007 or 2008.
A significant percentage of those already can shoot videos. Some can shoot at 15 frames per second. A few can shoot at 30 fps.
The effects of camera phones that shoot videos will be greater than non-wireless video recorders because they will be with you almost always, unlike dedicated video recorders.

Hi Robert,
Thanks for mentioning us. We’ve always believed video would be an important part of the kind of sharing across devices that we enable. As Alan R. points out above, a lot of camera phones are capturing video now, some very high quality.
While we’ve still got a lot in the works, we do a lot with video right now. Vizrea offers a simple way to share personal video (like camera phone video) on the web, publicly or only with people you invite. The service also lets people with a PC and a compatible camera phone stream video from their PC directly to their phone.

A new startup BlipBack.com promises to be a good choice for video blogging from a mobile device like a cameraphone or digital camera. They allow posting videos to your widget from a cellphone by sending it on [username]@blipback.com from the phone itself or via usual email clients.
And as long as the widget can be installed to any of your public pages (it can be used at Flicr for example) it could be the right tool both when you want to share video just with your family or publicly.
