Chris cracks up…

Oh, boy, now THIS is how to properly respond to blog criticism.

UPDATE: my blog commenters didn’t like it. I think the reason I liked it was that he laughed it off. I’ve tried a variety of ways to respond to various criticisms around the blogs and most just get you seen as an arrogant jerk, or dig you deeper in the hole, or feed the critic’s goals. Chris’s laughing it off is often the best way to respond, in my experience.

But, I admit, it might not be something worth watching in hindsight. So, I’ve just put up a bunch of great blogs on my link blog.

  1. Three minutes of a fake maniacal laugh? That was kind of dumb. And, judging by all the ‘OMG’ and ‘LMFAO’ comments, it would appear only the 14-year olds were impressed. Is that really the crowd Chris wants to pander to?

I mean no criticism to Chris (or you) here, but I just don’t agree that THAT is how to properly respond to blog criticism.

  3. well, this is a new type of “rebuttal” was mildly amusing, just wish it was a little funnier, or maybe I was expecting too much. I like Chris Pirillo though. wonder if more people will start having “discussions” this way…through video

  5. I’m with Tom.

How in the world was that how “to properly respond to blog criticism”? Chris looked/sounded like a biological mix between a human and monkey. That was just annoying, I had to close it half-way through.

  7. I’m kind of with the others in finding Chris’s response a bit over the top, but I think the spirit of it is in the right. The guy in the video obviously takes himself WAY too seriously, and that itself is funny.

Perspective is a precious thing, and particularly sparse in the blogosphere. Chris seems to have a pretty good understanding of just how much of what is done around here really is pure bs. And that’s fine. But, it remains, pure bs.

  9. The only thing I saw in that movie is that Chris can’t laugh like a straight man or he has a breathing problem. Jesus.

I don’t think any of these two guys are serious at what they’re doing.

Just commercial, just exposure to the world.
Just bitch about another blogger to get more attention.

    That’s what I think.

  11. I agree that laughing it off is the best way to go if you have the inner fortitude to do it. Good on Chris for choosing that route.

I’ve been thinking about “professionalism” the past few days and why it was created in the first place: so that people could work together effectively and not get sidetracked and derailed by the kinds of battles that have been erupting. I say that as someone who argued publicly with Mike Arrington myself.

I wonder if the web/blogosphere will always have this Wild West kind of culture or if it will move toward more professionalism, eventually?? I suppose there’s pros and cons, either way.

  13. It just made me find and watch the 1938 media site and clip as fast as I could.
Chris was laughing in such a fake way about the whole thing that I felt he (amazingly) actually may have a bruised ego over from it — and that is just a little scary to me.
I guess it demonstrates the problem with keeping your cheer leaders too close to you for years (they were virtually stroking Chris, as he spoke). You start believing your own PR.

  15. I thought it was mildly humorous (only because laughter is infectious when it’s like that) until he started in with the “goochy-goo” stuff. Then it just seemed childish.

I understand having the need to respond to hecklers and flamers. But resorting to childish behavior isn’t any better — in fact, it resembles the originators heckling more.

Humor is a fantastic way to combat the anger that comes from many commenters but there is a point where we may go over the line. Unfortunately, I think Chris did in this situation.

Chris’s laughing seemed one step away from crying.. A little strange, but good exposure for both, so who’s really laughing.

Actually, wait… no it wasn’t. It was dumb, puerile, immature and generally stupid.

  23. I have to agree with the naysayers: this video seemed very frantic and almost desperate as in “OMG, this guy is attacking me so I have to marginalize him in some way”. It was obvious from the video that Chris really didn’t think the video was funny and that he was, at least on some level, fairly bothered by it.

Personally, I think the best way to handle blog criticism is either to ignore it or to respond to it and move on. Pretending like it doesn’t bother you is disingenuous. Criticism bothers everyone. Nobody finds attacks like that on themselves funny.

  25. Yikes, that was…disturbing. Not to mention annoying.

I tuned-in to Pirillo when he first started doing the live on uStream thing. There was a lot of holding court, and really who wants to converse in an environment like that (save the ppl that are just there to kiss ass?) It doesn’t seem to have changed at all…the running comments are a testament to who’s actually watching him. There’s a difference between following someone and being a follower. He’s preaching to followers, and in their language.

    Thumbs down. Maturity counts.

And, truthfully, after seeing that video demonstration I’ll skip by anything you ever write in reference to Chris.

The 1938 dude was so unprofessional and Chris’s reaction to him was as well so unprofessional.

You know, with the instant communications world we now live in, we have to work harder at checking ourselves before publishing dumb, childish content.
