It’s amazing how fast news passes through the blogosphere. I’ve gotten this emailed to me four times from four different parts of the world. It’s a rumor of whats coming in a future update for the Apple iPhone.

I tell ya, nothing gets people to talk like Apple does. Nothing.

Sounds interesting but most Apple rumors don’t turn out to be true. Just something to keep in mind. I’ve been burned before by rumors, even ones I heard from Apple employees.

UPDATE: if you’re looking for information on the latest updates, I’d look at Apple Rumors site. As of August 2, 2007, this is the newest information on the update.

    Today I had lunch with my brother. He doesn’t know what the iPhone is (he’s 47 yrs old), but didn’t stop talking about sports for the entire meal.

    Nothing gets people to talk like sports, politics and sex. Not even at the level Apple gets geeks to talk about Apple products 🙂

  10. I think the new rumors about the Iphone for Christmas is to fast to soon! Let’s remember that the Iphone took forever to be released from being told about. I think they want to bank off of this phone as much as they possibly can before they start marketing another version.

  12. the curiosity in these rumors begs me to wonder if apple will actually provide any updates…it has proven that they ‘upgrade’ versus require to buy new. for someone on the fence to buy an iphone, that is what concerns me…am i spending for a short-term obsolete device because apple doesn’t want to firmware upgrade the device but sell new functionality only a new device?

  14. You may be right about this rumor being false but if you figure all those that are waiting for the improvements mentioned, such as myself, that would be a pretty good market. Who is to say that the current iPhone users will not simply wait for the second update instead when the “killer app” of this phone could arrive. Since this phone is supposed to be so advanced it would make sense for some talented developer to fill in the unseen hole in the market that no one has thought of yet.

    Besides there are alot of haters out there that just love to spread these rumors about.

    I say sit back relax have an expresso and enjoy life!

Tim Heuer…What you’re missing is that Apple is spreading the proceeds of the sale over two years so they can add features and updates free without accounting problems like they had with the addition of 802.11n in the MacBooks. And, SJ made a big deal out flexible the phone is and how the features are not locked in hardware like the rest of the lot.

  18. I agree with RBA. I talked to an owner or franchiser of an elite audio and video store today. He did not know what AppleTV is. Seems not to have considered devices other than the McIntosh products he sells. Apple still has plenty of virgins to reach.

  20. PXLated: i hope so, i’m leaning more and more toward getting one (reviewing att terms now) but will be ultra pissed if features i know can be software updated will not be available. the v1 should be feature parity (exception of 3G and capacity) with other newer devices.

  22. I definitely hope that some of it comes true, but I have to admit, it sounds a bit too good to be true. I’m really hoping for iChat and more support for the landscape keyboard.

    Again you show what a closed, myopic world you live in. I submit I could walk down the street and find more people willing to talk about B. Hussein Obama than Apple. Hell, I could find more people willing to talk about Bill Gates than Apple

    That’s funny, whenever I go out, sports or politics is the top conversation topic. But then again, I hang out with normal folk. Not tech-geeks (even though I am one).

    Scoble, does this not fly in the face of your past statements that Apple didn’t blog enough? Does this not put the lie to the notion that blogging is important for companies to do? Does this not undercut your entire premise regarding corporate blogging?

  43. im thinking of getting an iphone myself, but besides the touch screen, the interface seems kind of bland. No video camera, no MMS, no flash player etc….so are you saying there will be software updates for all this stuff?

    Not a waste of money, but not perfect. Mine hangs a few times a day, and eats batteries. It’s browser crashes intermittently and the keyboard is frankly worse than a blackberry.

    All that said, you will have to pry it out of my cold, dead hand.

    If you want a very functional phone with a keypad, save your money – there are better single-function phones. If all you want is email, get a Blackberry.

    But this device is so much better if you use phone, email, and SMS. The SMS interface is very slow, but vastly superior to any other phone I know. The voicemail interface is incredible – all visual. You never have to call in and press arcane sequences of * and numbers. You pick the one you want to hear, listen to it, and delete the ones you don’t want.

    Prior to the iPhone, I hated voicemail. The systems from the phone vendors seem designed to use up minutes, not help you. Now I use it and SMS constantly.

    As for battey life, it is critically bad. I cannot make it through even one day without recharging. And that is with a fresh battery.

    My read from friends who have the iPhone is that if you are inclined to want something well-designed, you will ignore the not insignificant flaws. If you are inclined to find a simple phone better, you will likely find it to be a waste of money.

  49. Interesting comments, Matt – I’m not exactly having the same experience. I haven’t had mad lockups or major problems (other than the occassional Safari crash). In the first month mine has locked up and required a hard boot precisely once.

    The keyboard, while definitely DIFFERENT than a blackberry (or a Dash, or an s710, which are my more recent experiences) once accustomed to it I wouldn’t say it’s inherently worse functionally in most cases. The autocorrect is really uncanny. The biggest issue is when the autocorrect doesn’t kick in and then you need to type precisely for it to work right.

    On battery life, if I leave WiFi on I get a day’s use out of the phone in general – but I definitely need to recharge at least once per day. If I leave WiFi off – like last week when I was onsite with a client – I could easily make it through two days. I’m checking email every 15 minutes to give a reference point on usage. I probably spend 30 minutes or so a day on the phone.

    One thing we do agree on – you’d have to fight me for it. My personal opinion is that the iPhone may turn out to be the most significant productivity device in recent memory once the Exchange sync is worked out.

  51. I like my iPhone. But I wouldn’t say it’s for everyone. I sold my iPod and really enjoy not needing 2 devices to carry around. Listening to music…having the music fade out when I get a call and fade back in once the call is over is wonderful. Also not having to remove the headphones to get a call is very convenient especially if you are expecting a call while you are listening to music. With a good wifi connection it seems more like a read only pocket laptop.
