Jason raves about his Shure headphones…

Jason Calacanis is raving about his Shure Headphones. Hey, Jason, how do they compare to the Ultimate Ears? They are amazing too. Totally agree that you should get a good set of headphones, though. I’ll have to check these out at the CES show next week.

  1. I just can’t understand why these and others like them are so expensive — some are up to $1K. Come on. Is platinum required in the manufacturing process?

  3. Don’t forget the customer reviews – more than one user has required a trip to the ER to have parts of the earphones extracted from their ear canal.

    Pass.

  5. These aren’t headphones, they’re “in ear monitors” of the sort that the big time touring acts use for monitoring. Rick, the reason some of them are so expensive is that they are custom molded, hand built multi driver ear pieces that are high performance and not for everyone. In the same way that everyone doesn’t need an 8 way Sun box as a server. As far as getting stuck in the ears thing…horseshit.. those sorts of devices have been used in professional (and now local and bar band) touring for more than a decade.

  7. Stefan, I’m with you on that. I tried two sets of Shure and just couldn’t get used to having something so deep inside my ear. When I’m at my computer I use the wonderful Grado SR80 and the Senn PX100s with my iPod during the daily commute. They sounds great and they fold up well.

  9. These are awful! I have had to return one pair after they seemd to ose all bass and now the second pair is doing the same thing -absolutely no bass. When each pair was brand new they were fine, but within two weeks of very modest use the bass just seemed to disappear. Even the cheapies that come with the ipod sound fabulous compared to these. I’m not even going to bother to return the second pair. I think they are just defective. If this is the way they are supposed to sound they are terrible!

  11. Everyone is a little different as far as what style they are comfortable with regarding headphones. It is sort of interesting to hear the opinions of folks using these inside-the-ear style like the Shure and the Ultimate Ears, as it seems that people either absolutely love them or else totally can’t stand them. There doesn’t seem to be much, if any, middle ground. That’s quite different from what I usually hear when folks are giving their take on the more conventional style of cans. You hear people who really like the Sennheiser HD650 phones more than anything, or some who think that maybe the Beyerdynamic DT880 phones are better than sex. I’ve never heard anything negative about any brand of circumaural headphones in this similar price range to the in-the-ear style headphones.
Although nothing, in my view, is better than sex, I like both the Senns and the DT880s so much that I only wish that I had four ears.

  13. I have the rubber part stuck in my ear right now. It’s very unpleasant and I can’t get it out so I’m off to ER.

    Great.

And, no, this isn’t a joke.

  15. Me too. I hate them earbuds. They keep falling off or they quickly wear out or the wire can easily be yanked and it won’t work then.
