How news spreads…
Dave Winer just called me and said Apple is coming out with an iPhone SDK next year.
How did he know? It’s on Twitter. Not on TechMeme.
MacNN has the story. I just got up, so more to come after I clear my head.
What will this enable? Tons more apps like what Mike Cannon-Brookes (CEO of Atlassian) is showing me here.
My reaction: wonderful news.
UPDATE: as of about 10 a.m. it’s now on TechMeme. Interesting, I’ve seen this behavior several times before that news will break over on Twitter about an hour before it’ll get on TechMeme.
UPDATE 2: at about 10:45 a.m. it moved to the top of TechMeme. I just read my feeds and the story broke somewhere around 8 a.m. this morning.

I wonder if this is in-spite of everyone’s complaints or because of them. If it’s the latter then it proves that bloggers can–together– be more powerful then even the mighty Steve Jobs (who I somehow doubt came up with the idea himself).

@Seth,
The latter has been proved by the $100 refund for early adopters… 🙂

The SDK is great news.
Whats the big deal about Twitter being an hour ahead of Techmeme? What happens in that hour?

Seth, Jobs has stated *many* times that Apple are trying to find a solution that allows 3rd party apps but also maintains security. He said it at Macworld. He said it at All Things D. He said it in Europe recently. But the moaners were just baying for blood and ignored this. Now they will take credit for forcing Apples hand. Kinda like Greenpeace

Hi Robert,
I’m with Michael. The amount of garbage you seem to have to sort through in your life just to get word about certain developments *one hour* before everyone else. Who needs it? It’s crazy! You should focus on your value added.

@Levi: Good point, I’d already forgotten about that episode :-). Opening up the phone is a significantly bigger deal, but that “rebate” was certainly a precusor
@project: I’m aware of what Steve Jobs has said, but then I’d sure like to know what the big security developments have been between early summer and now. Furthermore, one can hardly deny that Apple, through much of it’s history, hasn’t been very “pro” open-source. I’m simply saying that what happening with the iPhone is a significant step in the right direction, one that has a lot to do with the web’s massive “suggestion box”-like functionality.

Seth, seeing as this is their first attempt, perhaps they just hadn’t developed the security mechanism to allow 3rd party apps at the time? The fact the current apps run as root all but confirms this.
What I took from Jobs’ comments all along was ‘we dont want to announce anything because we arent ready yet, but we are headed in that direction’.

Why keep harping about people beating TechMeme? Aren’t they supposed to have the big/important news? How can they do that without waiting to see how much talk an item gets? Heck, I’m sure there were plenty of people in Apple that new this months ago, might as well complain about whoever posted it on Twitter not doing it back then.
