Talking RSS in the Enterprise with Attensa

I’ve been watching Attensa for a while. They are competing with Newsgator over RSS in the Enterprise (both companies make news aggregators that plug into Outlook, and both are working on strategies to go after big-company users because they are seeing more and more RSS users in big companies).

Either way, it’s useful to get a look at what they are doing (hopefully I’ll sit down with Newsgator soon, but here’s Attensa’s Scott Niesen talking with me and demoing Attensa.)

  1. I disagree with the terminology, especially on using “RSS”.

    Since you are such a fan of techmeme, let me know how you explain techmeme does not use RSS. How are conversations happening in your RSS world?

    RSS is not even a competent protocol :
    – it’s insecure : you can dump any javascript you want there, and take advantage of the fact that a number of RSS readers use a web browser to render news items, instead of a dedicated component that does not understand javascript (and therefore secure in this regard)
    – it’s incomplete : you cannot click on a link in a RSS item in order to read another RSS item
    – it’s has a lot of cousins, therefore the barrier to entry for an RSS implementer is virtually infinite. And with the advent of microformats (i.e. RSS extensions), it’s going to get worse over time.

  13. Hi Robert,

    This is an interesting concept. I was thinking what are your thoughts on something like this but for Enterprise SaaS platforms.

    We are considering Salesforce.com (Apex) and Apprenda and we have the chance of requesting something like this as our SaaS platform of choice.
