Calling into PodTech…

Paul Lancour of PodTech called me last night, we had a nice conversation about what I’m experiencing, and he put it up for you to listen in on. Another day, another packed schedule coming.

  1. Robert, that was a highly informative interview you gave Paul Lancour over at PodTech. I got a fairly good sense of what it’s like for you to be covering the Edwards campaign in its infancy.

By the way, I’ve put up a link to it at The Blogging Journalist. I want my readers to hear it.

  3. It’s really great the Edwards is bringing so much energy and enthusiasm to the start of his campaign. But having to wake up at 2am to be grilled by the Press? That’s a pretty tough schedule. I hope he can hold up for the rest of this trip.

Robert, what do you think of the Edwards’ Website/blog? There’s a lot going on there, but I don’t easily see a critical discussion of the important issues. I don’t care about photo-ops. His staff should consider having separate sections dedicated to single issue, and then invite those most experienced in or affected by these issues to comment, even those with opposing opinions.

  5. @5 Not sure Edwards is up to the task of engaging in a critical discussion. For example, back in 2004 in New Hampshire he was asked what he would do about Iraq. He said “We need the UN in there”. Uh.. Mr. Edwards, the UN got out because they said it was too dangerous. “Then we need NATO in there”. Uh, Mr. Edwards we have 21 out of the 34 countries in NATO in Iraq already. “Excuse me. I have to go”

It will be interesting to see what is different about the 2008 version of Edwards from the 2004.. that version came in 4th in New Hampshire, 3rd in Delaware, 2nd in Oklahoma..couldn’t even beat the looney Clark. The only primary he won was is birth state (not resident state), South Carolina. He pulled only 10% in Fla, 8% in Maine, and 7% in AZ and Miss. then got the hint and gave up. You’d think a man that gets paid to sell an argument to a jury would have been able to make a good case to the voters. Scoble, are you going to ask him what he’s learned since 2004 that will make him different than that version?

  7. The last two decent presidents we had were Reagan and before him, Teddy Roosevelt. Whatever happened to a president with guts and conviction. We haven’t seen it for years and likely never will again.

The Democrats are chomping at the bit to give the US over to the UN in almost every way. Bush stomped that twice now already. The Republicans are no better. I just don’t vote anymore since my vote only goes to elect someone who could care less about me and what I may be going through. LBJ was the last president to actually follow through with a promise he made. Not one president since has done so.

Why do people even bother. Edwards is a lawyer. Never forget that. We need an everyman president. I suggest electing someone like Paul Senior from American Chopper. He may be rough around the edges, but he’s real. Vinnie for VP.

  9. Moose: I think you’re wrong. Everytime Edwards speaks he pisses off millions of people. That takes real conviction. For instance, he wants to raise taxes. That automatically will keep my brother from voting for him. In another place he’s for stem-cell research. That’s guaranteed to piss off the religious right. In another place he’s saying we need to pull out of Iraq now. Obviously other people think he’s wrong on that. In another place he says he’s for giving the same rights to gays that heterosexual couples have. You KNOW that’ll piss people off, don’t you?

You might not like what he’s saying, but it takes conviction to talk in front of people and give answers about your questions.

  11. Scoble,

Edwards is not saying anything any other democrat is not saying right now. They all want to raise taxes. Fine. Raise my taxes and give me a socialized medicine.

Give gays the same rights, but don’t force me to spend my taxes on that ideal.

Let’s get our of Iraq. I agree.

Scoble, everyone pisses off everyone else in politics. Edwards is no different than any politician in that regard. Bush has probably pissed off more people than any other US president in history. He’s not popular, and even the right wing is starting to leave his side.

I’m an idealist. I’ve often thought that given enough money, I’d move to Europe, someplace like Spain or Norway, someplace socialist where my taxes at least give me something in return. Edwards can raise taxes all he wants, but until I see a huge gain in minimum wage and socialized medicine, I don’t want to hear any promises. Less talking, more doing, thank you. It pisses me off that both parties have all but dismantled the unions in this country. This would never go over in Europe.
My biggest problems aren’t gays or war, stem cell research or global warming — it’s taxes, money, and education. I simply want return on investment for my taxes. I’ve not seen anything. So what, highways and county swimming pools. New computers in the school systems every 10 years. Give me something tangible for my money. This country is the only nation in the industrialized world that does not have socialized medicine. Go figure. We’d rather spend the money killing our own soldiers in a war we cannot win short of becoming worse than what they were led by before.
Let’s supprt Edwards if he wants to help the everyman QUICKLY, and with results within his 4 years. Any promises he makes had better be seen, that’s all. You see, the problem is that in this country, the politicians have all sold out to the big companies, especially the big pharmacy companies, and the doctors lobbies. Give the people what they want.

As Mr. Spock once said: “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.”

  15. “Socialized” medicine means politicized medicine, and we have it already. Europe/Canada’s is a different variety to be sure; but it’s failing, and they’re seeking free market alternatives as we speak.
Go ahead and hand medicine over to politicians if you like. But be prepared that it won’t work as advertised. Nothing political ever does.
