One of the things I offered Seagate with them sponsoring my show is a contest. I designed this with Valerie and Linda and a few others at PodTech.
Got a stack of Seagate hard drives to give away. What’s the contest?
Blog about what you are going to do with a new hard drive. Details and rules and stuff are over here.
So, if I was able to enter, here’s probably what my entry would look like:
Let’s see, I’m doing a lot of video lately. I’ve already filled up two 500GB drives with ScobleShow videos, along with a few of Patrick goofing around, and about 43GBs of photos. One of which has Maryam flipping me off cause I made her walk up a steep hill to take that picture of me next to the tree above (true story, it was our honeymoon).
Anyway, things are getting pretty tight. I have about 1.1GBs of email from the six months I’ve worked at PodTech, including 118MBs of just people wanting me to blog stuff (true story #2, I wish I had more time to get to everyone).
Anyway, let’s just cut the crap. I need more space so I can download Dawn and Drew for my son. ZeFrank and Rocketboom for me.
Oh, who am I kidding? Of course it’s for porn.
Oh, get your mind out of the gutter. Not THAT kind of porn.
“Well, what kind?”
Please, Seagate, send me a new hard drive so I can load up all that foodporn and I can satiate myself looking at all those luscious videos of sushi. Of course, maybe I’ll cheat and download some of those chocolat videos.
Heheh.
Disclaimer, Seagate sponsors my show and are sponsoring the BlogHaus at CES and I really appreciate that.
You forgot the other necessary conditions for entering:
“Show us how much space you don’t have left on your hard drive by posting a screen shot of your computer’s hard drive (free and used space pie chart) – so we know you need more!
– Leave a comment on this blog post with your first and last name and permalink to your blog post.”

Samuel: true! I gotta do that tomorrow when I am at my Mac. My current machine still has too much space available.
And, anyway, I’m not eligible to win.

I guess I am just not geek enough. I have far less storage than you and far more than I need. All my hard drives are less than a third full and that includes the external that I use for offline backup. I’m not much into music and don’t have any video. I’m not one for watching the same thing over and over again. Nothing plays music like my Bose Wave Radio/CD and I don’t carry an MP3 player. So good luck to people who enter – I’m sure a lot of people need the space more than I do.

Alfred: my son has gigs of podcasts.
But, really, wait until you get a Media Center with an HDTV. Then you’ll want tons of more hard drives.

Robert, cool contest and just like you to always think of your readers. One question I’ve been trying to understand about these ginormous external drives the last few weeks, which perhaps you can get someone from Seagate to clear up, is this:
Why do they all come with only USB and Firewire connectivity? At 750GB that’s far more than most individuals need (not counting the ones who’ll win this contest) but is great for dropping on the network to backup the entire house/family’s PCs. So why aren’t Seagate et al putting ethernet ports on the box allowing them to connect to the WAP/wireless router or switch that so many have to share the broadband connection.

Jason: yeah, 500 gigabyte drives. Thanks for catching that! I’m still living in the 1990s.

I’m sure you wont agree but “post to win” seems to be in a similar category as “pey per post” – to me anyway.
It boils down to “SEO gaming” which isn’t allowed on wordpress according to http://scobleizer.com/2006/11/10/wordpresscom-doesnt-allow-payperpost-and-other-seo-gaming/
It’s an incentive to post about a particular subject.
How do you back up your data? – not that a Seagate drive would ever fail of course.

We don’t all have video cameras but I’m looking into getting one. I also just got a media center PC (actually bought it for my wife) but haven’t hooked it up to the cable yet. Maybe those things wil change my storage needs. I guess we’ll wait and see.

Digital Photos, Video, Media PC is going to develop a need for home users to upgrade their storage. My storage needs were never a problem until I bought a Digital Camera with video possibilities. My free space is rapidly reducing.

Ideally, I’d like to rip not only all my music CDs to a giant RAID in my closet (that gets installed in the next 6 months), but I’d also like to put all of my DVDs and video games onto it so that I don’t have to shuffle discs any more; just point my 360 to a Media Center PC, and let it manipulate all the multimedia in my house. Lesse…approximately 500 albums- 150 of which are double CDs – then there are about 300 DVDs plus about 15 video games. I don’t even want to do the math requirdd to estimate how much space I’d need!
Unfortunately, the technology doesn’t support that right now (I can rip a DVD, but not sure if Media Center would treat the rip like one, and I know i can’t rip a 360 DVD). I’m hoping the next iteration of video game consoles will get out of the media format wars altogether & allow playback off a secured mass storage device such that your movie, video game, whatever can come on Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, whatever, because they’ll ultimately wind up on a hard drive somewhere.

I got 2nd place, but haven’t heard anything from PodTech yet (and from the comments, it doesn’t sound like any of the other winners have heard anything either). Do you know what’s going on Robert?

Thanks for the reply Robert. We understand everyone at PodTech is pretty swamped right now after CES, we were just starting to worry since we hadn’t heard anything yet.
