FastCompanyTV: the three-month report

We started FastCompanyTV the first week of March this year. What a lot has happened in three months.

Here’s a rundown of the videos we’ve done. ScobleizerTV (S)=36 shows. WorkFastTV (WF)=1 show. Global NeighbourhoodsTV (GN)=14 shows. FastCompanyLive (FCL)=44 shows. Total of 95 shows. Yowza, with more on the way.

My favorite ones? The Tesla drive, the IBM moving the Atom, the Yosemite ones with Michael Adams, and the Rackspace ones (they went IPO right after we shot, so we have the last video before their quiet period, plus they were darn cool and their new headquarters are mondo big).

What did we do bad? 1. Didn’t get enough outside of the technology industry and didn’t get short versions done. 2. Also didn’t get transcripts done yet. 3. We had a rough beginning with Shel’s show that got a lot better over time. 4. Also, the cell phone videos aren’t integrated into the site the way they should be (I start those over on Qik, then move them over later, which totally doesn’t take advantage of the “live” ability of cell phone videos).

I’d love to know what you think, good or bad. The next three months are going to be just as wild. Starting next week as we go to Seattle to see lots of startups and more stuff at Microsoft, too.

iPhone 3G?

The hype is in overdrive that there’s a new iPhone coming on Monday. On the other hand, I’ve been hearing that Forbes/Financial Times/Barrons’ rumors of troubles in getting the new 3G iPhone design done and to production are correct and that there’s no way that it’ll be ready to ship this month. It’s very possible that my source is working on a phone that’s coming later this year and there’s another one coming from another team that my source (who, obviously, needs to remain anonymous because Apple employees and contractors aren’t allowed to speak with the press and/or bloggers) isn’t involved in (which, if true, demonstrates that Apple is probably working on several iPhones to be released by the end of this year).

I’m also hearing that the new processor (that’s not ready yet, my source says) they are working on is a four-core design ARM (my source says it’s an ARM 11) that Apple has designed — the first processor in the original iPhone was a three-core ARM (my source says it was an ARM 7, but Wikipedia says it’s an ARM 11)  that was integrated into a chip designed by Samsung. I’m also hearing that the new iPhone (again, the one that my source said isn’t ready yet) will have a much better graphics processor, too, but he wasn’t sure of the technical details on that, so we’ll have to wait and see. What will the one released on Monday have (if an iPhone is getting released at all) is still unknown.

But, again, my sources aren’t that good and Apple really makes sure that any one employee has absolutely no idea what else is being worked on, so who knows what we’ll see on Monday? Over on TechMeme (still my favorite news site, although FriendFeed has taken over my obsessive “noise” reading — news is breaking on FriendFeed 15 minutes to 75 minutes faster than TechMeme, but you gotta wade through a lot more noise to find that news) iPhone is already dominating the page, and within minutes of the announcements that Steve Jobs will make on Monday.

Me? I’m not going to WWDC. I’m going to some fun stuff up in Seattle instead. Translation: there’s absolutely no reason for any journalist except for the A list to be at the press conference — it’s going to be the most overcovered event of the year). That said, I’ll be watching Engadget and TechCrunch like a hawk to see if I should run to an Apple store (they do the best early reporting on Apple’s live events). If Apple does indeed, ship something, I’ll buy one of the first ones and let you know what I think.

The sixth question companies ask about social media

I was just reading TechMeme and saw that Jeremiah Owyang has a great post on the five questions that companies ask about social media.

I have a sixth one: “how will doing this help my sales?”

How do I know that? A multi-billion-dollar-a-year company just asked me that.

Yeah, that’s similar to #2 on Jeremiah’s list, but gets much more directly to the point.

Of course, this is a question that isn’t answerable. Even if you think you can answer it, this is “code” for a way to tell the person asking to please go away and don’t come back.

Why do I say that?

Because there’s no way to prove that ANYTHING a business does will lead to more sales.

Even those “pay per click” ads on Google aren’t guaranteed to increase sales.

Quick, name one thing that’s GUARANTEED to increase sales at any company. Any one that you could come up with I could say “um, no” to if I wanted to.

And, anyway, companies do things that aren’t directly tied to sales all the time.

How about those press releases that the same big company just sent me. The speeches at conferences that this big company does all the time. The sign on the side of their Silicon Valley office. Does that increase sales? Cost a lot of money.

How about the security equipment that you have to pass through in its lobby. Did that increase sales?

How about the CEO’s nice windows in his office? Did those increase sales?

Ahh, but I do like hearing this form of no. It makes my creative juices run and they are giving us a chance with another meeting, which is better than hearing “hell no, now get out of my office.”

How do I answer this? Well, why did a guy who is selling $50 million a year in wine take half a year away from his business to learn to do this? He told me that it cost his business $24,000 per day that he was away in lost sales. Ask him today about the impact of that investment on his business and he sure is smiling a lot lately. But, can he prove that it increased sales? Why, yes he can, but then he took the time to do it and not say “I’ll only do this if it increases sales.”

How would you answer that question?
