Has your Facebook account been “erased” by Facebook?

Damn, ever since Facebook blocked my account for a little less than a day people have been calling me with some real sob stories about how their accounts got turned off by Facebook and that they have no recourse.

I seriously don’t know what to do either, but I’m going to collect them all and then write a post. Maybe a little “A list blog attention” will get some accounts relooked at.

Many people admit they were doing something naughty, like I was, but others say they weren’t doing anything wrong and didn’t get an answer about what they were doing that got them kicked off Facebook.

Either way, there’s a lot of people out there who’ve been “erased” and who haven’t gotten the same treatment my account got for some reason (I was turned back on).

Drop me a line, or, better yet, leave a comment on this post.

Personally, Facebook should have a citizen review board where appeals of “erasure” could be taken and where a decent answer could be attained.

Some things that have gotten people kicked off?

1. Using a fake name. Mini Microsoft was kicked off.
2. Behaving like a spammer. Sending out lots of birthday party invitations got one person kicked off.
3. Using automated systems like what I was doing to look at things.

But, again, lots of people who’ve been emailing me and calling me say they haven’t done any of those three and still got kicked off and had no appeal.

Another place that people should go is to Satisfaction. They have a bunch of info for banned people there.

  1. This is what I wrote to Facebook and they’re just not willing to comply which is really sad. I know you’re very busy and cant be bothered about peoples facebook accounts but please sort this problem out for me, its so annoying, I hope you understand mate.

Dear Facebook, my account username is bugtiz@gmail.com and I just joined Facebook almost 4 weeks ago. I’ve many friends and I even emailed Facebook requesting them for an increase in my friends limit and 2 days ago my account was also disabled. I emailed facebook and they said that I misused the site (probably by adding too many people at one time or poking them). This isnt fair, facebook always temporarily disables a users account the first time for a day or two as an initial warning but with me the case is different, my account was disabled and now they’re not re-activating my account! Please help? I even said, if I made a mistake, I’m sorry, I’ll be much more careful next time but please re-activate my facebook account as I feel lost without it and I would like to start using it again. I worked so much on my facebook account to make it better and now its been taken away from me, I feel so lost and frustrated without it, you can understand. Please, reactivate my account so that I may start using it again, thankyou 😦

  3. Nothing automated ever…saying happy birthday when birthdays came up, inviting friends to my group, responding to questions from members of the large group I maintained. Sheesh, I even bought advertising from them so they made actual money from me as a member. I did invite a large number of friends from my industry but never spammed my group on any walls. Basically the stuff that a social network was designed for (or so I thought).

Some admin just pulled the plug one day. The appended email is particularly funny given the amount of spam that I received from people that I didnt know (not to mention vampire bites, etc.)

Actually, now that my FB withdrawal is over, screw them and their valuation hubris – its the same hubris that killed friendster (“who?”). They seem to have forgotten that the users are the ones that provide any perceived value for them.

My feet are the best way to vote at this point. Any value that my eyeballs provide for them along with the advertising dollars burning a hole in my pocket are better suited elsewhere at this point.

  7. I’ve been deactivated from Facebook.

I’m under 18 and when I signed up they forced me to join a school network – except my school wasn’t on there. They then took me to a page to put in details about my school so they could add my school network, except once I did that I was taken back to the first page again.

I would definitely consider myself a computer/internet savvy teenager, and there was no way I could sign up using my correct information.

So I put my birth date in as 1920. My school friends all had the same problem and they all ended up either lying about their age or putting themselves in another schools network. Some simply gave up and didn’t bother signing up.

Months later I wanted to change my birthday to 1990, so I followed the links to send them an email.’

I got an email back saying they’d deactivated my account because I was under 18 without a school network, and asked for my school details.

It’s been a while now and still no reply. I’ve completely disappeared off the site, as happened to you. It’s very frustrating, it’s not my fault at all.

I have events that I’m planning to attend being organised through Facebook Events that I can’t access, and the organisers think I’m not attending now.

Facebook should really sort out this mess.

FB is fine, but I don’t go along with their data activities (duh) so wanted to be removed. Surprised there was no way to actually close an account, I had to talk to them over a three day period to do this. Now it’s done. Supposedly.

I don’t want that. I want to have control over who has my data – and right now I don’t want Facebook to have it (and this was even before all of the Beacon controversy).

So I contacted support asking to permanently erase my data. The reply was something to the effect of “It’s impossible for use to remove your data as we need it to keep track of records and usage”.

    What?

I was aware of this, and I attached the account to my work email so I could edit it and take the friends of the product profile page, and make sure they found us on the new product group page, that was more appropriate. I sent Facebook a question about something or other, and got a response that the product profile page had been deleted; ok, this I can understand because it should have been there in the first place, but they also blocked my work e-mail address from appearing anywhere on Facebook. I’ve contacted them several times, but been met with no response. This means that on my personal profile page I cannot put my work contact information nor can I put it on our product page. Grrr. This means that all professional contact make on Facebook gets routed through my personal email, and it’s just a pain. If only someone at Facebook would listen…

Like I said several days back, I used “Real Name” for my name — that’s what it said I had to do 🙂 Of course I knew that that was not what they meant, but I figured hey, half the people I know on there are not on their “real name” either and for privacy I didn’t know if I wanted my “real name” used in that context. Anyway, they closed the account with NO NOTICE. When I figured out, they told me why — okay I can’t disagree, I didn’t use my real name, I used “real name”. However I said fine, I’ll use my real name … but they have blocked that email address so that I cannot re-enroll with my real name and my real email address. There is no process to get my email released. Sure I messed up I guess … but the email banned forever? I’ll admit I have not retried it lately. I don’t get facebook really, never have and probably never will. My kids get it.

As I mentioned when you posted this the first time around, you harvested data using an automated tool. Any site in the world should have banned you.

The fact that you got reinstated so quickly is bigger news than your banning.

The reason your “tool” and Facebook’s are different is simple: it’s not against Gmail’s TOS to extract your contact info. It IS againts Facebook’s to bot their site.

Follow the rules you agreed to follow and you won’t have any problems.

Don’t like the rules? Take your account and business elsewhere. It’s really not that complicated.

“But, again, lots of people who’ve been emailing me and calling me say they haven’t done any of those three and still got kicked off and had no appeal.”

I bet that most of these aren’t as black and white as these innocents proclaim. They’ll cry poor me, but I bet they did do something against the rules. And because you’re a very well known blogger, they’ll latch on to you and get you to help their cause.

For social networks I can see they might add value by providing useful tools to improve connections (but if they can’t figure out a way to be open and interact easily with mainly internet based content don’t waste your time with their old proprietary thinking model). I just don’t see much need to participate in an enterprise where I would have to invest my time and energy and content and hope that the company decides not to be evil for the rest of the time I want to deal with them.

Keep most of your content under your control. For example even if your content is in Blogger, the ability to backup (and move) your blogger blog essentially leaves the content in your control. Then if Google decides to be evil you just take you backup and post it elsewhere.

Some of these contacts I have no addresses for (they were people I had previously lost touch with). I have over 200k in poker…and my friends have also informed me that my name, etc. is STILL attached to several applications. Haikoo zoo, Friends for Sale, etc.
If they don’t wish to have me, I’ll go back to Myspace, no problem. At this point I am considering contacting my attorney about what options I have in protecting the personal information they won’t allow me to remove.
If you know of any resources, please let me know as FB just won’t reply to my emails.

I didn’t receive any statement/email/message from Facebook warning me about any misused or wrong action at all! I simply tried to log in and it stated that it was disabled. I have had Facebook for almost two years and uses it solely for keeping in touch with friends and partaking social events in which I am invited to. I don’t believe I was at fault in any way unless Facebook could state exactly what it was they disabled my account for. Please try your best to help us all on this issue, thanks!

  47. Last night my account was disabled and I wrote to the disabled@facebook.com address and received an automated message back. This morning I checked my mail and didn’t see a reply so I wrote again. In the afternoon I wrote a third time because I was getting impatient and finally wrote to info@facebook.com to see if I’d get a faster reply through that address.

10 minutes after writing to the “info” address I received a message saying my account has been reactivated and they apologize for any inconvenience.

No explanation, no warning as to what I did wrong… but either way I’m just glad things are back up and running.

  57. Hi, My facebook account was deleted because someone used their contact email as the same as mine. It deleted my account that was orignally with that one, and the account that newly added the address keeps it and just changes straight after, and the original account is deleted. I have appealed to get it back and am awaiting reply. Sorry if its a bit complicated!

  73. My account was disabled yesterday (20th May 2008). I was warned that I was sending messages at too fast a rate and I would hit a block. Stupidly I ignored this and kept on sending messages. I sent around 40 messages yesterday (about 20 had the same content).

I received and email at 17:53 BST warning me of my conduct, exactly 1 minute before getting an email explaining that I have now been disabled (at 17:54), please see below:

    Hi,

So I admit that I “violated” (such a strong word) Facebook’s terms and conditions, however I understand the consequences now and only wish to retreive my contacts names and email addresses, as well as my pictures, if they are not willing to re-enable my account.

I have sent them two email (to disabled@facebook.com), but im sure they get thousands per day.

I will try info@facebook.com later in the afternoon if I do not get a reply still.

    Regards

  75. Hi my name is Rebecca and I’m a persistant misuser and abuser of certain features as well….

On the weekend my account was disabled, and like some others I see I’m not alone…

I received a warning at my yahoo address and 2 seconds later got the disabled letter. Luckily.. after many emails, I finally heard back from appeals and mid-week reactivated my account . Turns out I was using their Search feature too much. But not without a claim that I had been warned numerous other times … when?? Never before had I ever recieved a warning..

I’ve read the Terms of Service, Code of Conduct.. yadda yadda carefully but realized just how vague they have written them.. and wrote my appeals officer back looking for some more specific definitions of persistant misuse, abuse, what features used too much will warrant a warning, and as well what their procedures are for warnings, how will I know I’ve been warned, and I also wanted a idea of what the limits are for these features.

    this is what I received:
    Hi Rebecca,

Unfortunately, for security reasons, we are unable to provide specific
details in regards to the rates and quantities that we determine to be
abusive. If we determine that you are abusing a feature, any of
several on the site, you will be warned. Simply slow your activity, and your
account will remain active. Unfortunately, some email provider delay
the warning messages you receive to your email account. I’m sorry for
the inconvenience. We appreciate your cooperation going forward.

    Thanks,

I’m still confused .. and still worried with every button I press that that’s it.. the end.. now that I’ve been deemed an offender I’m sure my limits are much lower than others.

I actually really enjoy facebook and really quite thankful for all the reconnect with old friends..

But customer service somehow has gotten overlooked. With over 70 million users how can this be?

I’ve been looking and getsatisfaction.com has quite a few in the same boat but facebook has failed to participate. Shame really…

Is there a governing body that requires such a large internet service to provide customer care and more specific usage guidlines?

Reset password wont work cause it will not send a link or email on my contact email add. Facebook team replied to me that I should not create a new account for them to fix the issue. Then next email came saying they did not find any account associated with my email add. Then a lot of friends pm me saying they cannot see my accountanymore. some said they do. Then Just this morning I received invitation to join facebook from email contact. Wow. I hate to start all over again. Very frustrating.

That is how we stay in touch, espcially the 3 boys that I mentor. I am not sure why my account was disabled, but I dont want these young people to think I abandoned them. A friend called and said it was like I simply disappeared, Farm and all. I just want to have my account reactivated and if I knew what I did wrong, I certainly wont do it again. I have emailed Facebook a few times and have heard nothing and am concerned over my pics and Farm and the students that I mentor.
