CNET announces the best of show, which is a Creative Media Player. They have reviews on lots of other things, including the Celestron which won best of show in a sub category.
But, for me and Shel Israel, there was another “best moment.” Yesterday at about 8:30 a.m. when Shel handed me a copy of our new book. It looks awesome! Here’s a picture of Shel holding the book moments after we met. We proceeded to give a presentation to the top book buyers in the world (including the top ones from Borders, Amazon, Barnes and Noble). We had a spirited and interesting conversation. Much like this conversation that John Furrier (who is the #7 podcaster on iTunes) had with us last week.
In the airport Shel and I put it up on a bookstore shelf just to see how it looked next to Malcolm Gladwell’s book. Looking good!
The entire process of doing the book was documented over on our book blog (and you can buy it there too!)
Anyway, that’s definitely going to be the moment I remember from this CES. Hope you enjoy the book.
Oh, and the reviews are continuing to come in. Kara Swisher, who writes for Wall Street Journal, told me she loved it. There is no bigger compliment than that.

That new Creative player does look very nice. If my phone didn’t already do all that, I’d consider it 🙂
But I hope Creative does it right this time. In the past they’ve had the better player (Zen Micro vs. iPod Mini for example), but screwed up for other reasons.
One of the biggest problems with the Zen Micro was that Creative couldn’t make up their minds whether they wanted people to use their crappy software or use MTP and PlaysForSure with Windows Media Player. So they ended up shipping one and offering firmware for the other (Which broke support for their apps) and was just completely not something a normal consumer could deal with.
Fortunately for my sister, after she got one last year at Christmas I flashed it with the PlaysForSure firmware and got her on her way. To this day she loves it and regularly buys music from the MSN Music Store because sync’ing with Media Player is so easy.
Unfortunately that’s not how most Zen Micro users experienced their devices.
I’m hoping that this Urge announcement turns things around. If they get a good music store + sync story out there and companies like Creative can start plastering MTV/Urge logos on their boxes for portable players that all work seamlessly with the store and software – things could be looking up for the non-Apple music crowd.
Just make sure Creative ships the *good* firmware this time.
