Exclusive first look at new Zude mashup capabilities

Zude invited me into the Web 2.0 Expo hall to see some new stuff that isn’t released yet. Damn, Zude is one of those things that you just need to keep playing with to get. They are letting you drag-and-drop all sorts of stuff from all sorts of places on the Web.

Think about building a mashup between Twitter, Facebook, Upcoming, Yelp, and other social networks. Now you’re starting to understand a little bit about how disruptive these guys are trying to be.

Of course, if you don’t think Zude is all that cool, I made a few videos at the Web 2.0 Expo yesterday. Here they are:

TripSay, a new site for vacationers.
My former boss, Lenn Pryor, who now is a VP at Nokia tells me about Nokia’s latest.
Moo’s CEO shows me the latest from the cool business card and printing people.
I get a neat tour of Blist, a cool Web-hosted database.
Amy Shuen, business school professor, talks to me about her new book on Web 2.0 strategy.
I get a look at Zloop, a new company that’s making a service for us to work together around projects. Part I, Part II/Demo.
Morfik showed me their new Web development tool, which builds rich internet applications.
DotHomes tells me about new real estate search engine.

  1. Robert,

While I do sincerely appreciate your bringing us all of this news concerning various happenings with the plethora of new companies out there, I honestly fail to see the value in so many companies basically doing the same things.

Granted, some of these companies do offer some very compelling stuff, but most of them are blah. They are a re-hash of each other. There are so manny Twitters, so many Techmemes, so many Friendsters, Facebooks, MySpaces. It’s almost information overload.

Like you, I am always keen to see what’s new. I get kinda excited, but then get let down when I see that something is just like something else.

I went to join MS’s Mash last night and had to do the waiting list thing. I hope it’s worth it.

  3. Texas Nerd,

Web services like FriendFeed and Zude are trying in their own way to aggregate/mash information from multiple sources and cater to different demographics (there are people who like x,y,z web services at one place and in a certain way, and there are who like w,x,y web services and in a certain way). Robert is doing a great job bringing these services to our notice and giving some of his own analysis on this, but utimately the mashups that are best in reducing noise and filtering through information overload, and in a way most people like it will survive, whereas others will join the deadpool soon.

  5. Fundamentally important questions…

Will Mesh be Mash or Mash be Mesh? Will Mash, Mesh or will Mesh have to be Mashed?

  9. Zude isn’t the only one trying to mash this all up. The mere fact that there’s the need for mashing up information from social networks…and believe me, I hear that there is all the time…is a sign that there’s not enough there there. Another way around this problem would be consolidation of the networks. The problem with that is that people choose networks FaceBook, MySpace, etc… and platforms like Twitter based on personal preferences of how they work, where their friendlings are (or could be), and by subtle differences in their personalities.

This combined with business reasons for lack of consolidation makes this a giant problem which hopefully Zude or someone like Zude can resolve.

  11. Every time I hear / see one of these sites like Zude, I keep thinking that what the web really needs is a button on every browser that can make a tumbleweed move around your screen. Possibly a coyote howing in the background as well.

“Think about building a mashup between Twitter, Facebook, Upcoming, Yelp, and other social networks”
    — I mean… So? Your point being? Oh I get it, it’s a service to enable businesses without a real business plan to exchange data. How long before we have some kinda “Meta-Zude” site to enable a mashup of your pointless mashups?

  13. Robert — It would be great if you had a feature on your site that was “What’s Scoble using now” (not what you are testing but rather the tools you are actually using day to day to do your job).

Ideally, those tools would be commercially available (hey — that could be part of your business model when you make recos on products…as long as we believe you haven’t been bought, it would be useful). I find that some of the tools that you and Jarvis talk about give me tech-envy but when it comes to being able to actually get them, it’s difficult to impossible. For example, I had a hard time finding how to get Jarvis’ “MoJo” setup. If your recommendation list also spoke to limitations in different countries with alternatives, it would be that much more useful.

I appreciate that you are a guinea pig and dogfood eater but it would be good to know what a normal person could get that you are using to do your job.

    What do you say?!

  17. @8. My bet he gets his email dumped into outlook. Uses Word and Excel. For actual productivity stuff. I’d bet my left nut he doesn’t use Zoho, thinkfree or GoogleDocs to write his fastcompany column. None of this stuff being written about enables people to make money or be more productive or have a better life. Now having NO LIFE; thats a different story

  19. This mashup thing is beginning to sound like mixup thing…I’m sure too much of anything (even a darned good thing) is bad…

True, only those mashups that provide real value will rise to the top, but there is so much clutter out there, it looks like it will take a whole lot of time before the cream rises to the top.

It might be a good idea for someone to start tracking only really useful mashups…Robert is as good as any who can do it, but he seems to prefer spending his gigantic brains and his phenomenal brand value on mere trifles…talk of people not valuing there assets!
