“Live” Rocketboom coming soon

I uploaded this to YouTube. Why? Cause Kyte.tv wouldn’t let me upload this file and because I’m considering using YouTube to distribute some of my videos. Chris Pirillo is seeing a lot of success there, one of his videos a couple weeks ago was viewed hundreds of thousands of times.

Anyway, here’s a conversation I had with Andrew Baron, founder of the popular video show Rocketboom, on my cell phone as I drove him to the airport today. He told me that a “live” version of Rocketboom will be coming soon. He also gave me an update on what else is going on over at Rocketboom.

Speaking of YouTube: the video quality here is a lot better than Kyte.tv. Amazing how good my Nokia N95 looks on YouTube.

In the six-minute video Andrew praised DotSub. I love this service too and will be looking at how to use it for my own videos. What is it? It has the ability to embed translated captions into the video stream and anyone can add a new translation. This is going to be hugely important and is a feature I wish YouTube and Kyte would add.

UPDATE: did you see the truck go by at 4:41 in the video that says “more video on demand?” I didn’t even see that, but someone pointed out. Wild.

  3. JoeM: because the audience is on YouTube. And I already had an account there. And, because I’m lazy. Also, doesn’t SoapBox use Microsoft’s Silverlight? I can’t get those things to play on my systems and all the Linux folks would complain.

  7. Sick of seeing links to Kyte when reading feeds on my iPhone. Youtube would certainly be an improvement in that regard.

  11. One of the reason youtube will always be here is because everywhere ‘official’ restricts their videos to the U.S. Plain and simple.

    As a user, I don’t give a shit about the rationale for only allowing U.S. viewers watch certain videos (copyright, ads, etc).

    And speaking of YouTube, take a look at what the 2nd most subscribed channel of all time is. Yes, Universal Music Grop. Of all people/companies. More popular than lonelygirl15. Why? They’ve uploaded thousands of music videos in many different genres. They’ve uploaded back catalogue material that makes users nostalgic. They keep adding videos on a regular basis. They allow comments. It’s not restricted by geography.

    It’s quite honestly the perfect big media YouTube channel.

    These are great and I love how informal they are. But I have to echo the comments above, it does look kinda dangerous to be doing this while driving, especially if you’ve got a kid in the back seat.

  23. YouTube’s ubiquity is a problem in and of itself. In a corporate environment, YouTube is often the first online video site that is blocked by firewalls.

    My workplace has access to Kyte, Blip, Google Video, Yahoo Video and a bunch of smaller players but no YouTube (or Jumpcut, oddly enough). Of course the smaller players don’t have the mindshare and crossposting to other services is time consuming and wasteful of bandwidth (even if it is cheaper than ever).

    I don’t have any answers, but it is something to consider.
