Lots of speaking today, thanks to my friends

Whew, lots of speaking this morning. Talked with the Seattle Chamber of Commerce already, am meeting with information officers from all sorts of government branches in 20 minutes, talking at Amazon around noon.

What's interesting about speaking is what you learn. I love talking with business people who are trying to learn how to make their businesses work better. People are still trying to figure out how search engines work and how that's disrupting their businesses. There were lots of scribbling when Shel and I talked about search engine optimization.

On another topic. I've been getting some very nice emails and phone calls from you all. I got one from Dave Sifry, founder of Technorati, today that's going to keep a smile on my face for days. I won't tell you what he said, but this journey has been quite remarkable.

It's the relationships that are magical. It's the small things in life. It's getting more people onto the Web and into using technology to connect with other people who care about what they care about. It's about listening. I haven't done enough of that. I'm gonna listen to Dave's voice mail again. And again. And again. Anytime I need a smile.

We need more smiles. Hope you have one today.

  1. I enjoy your blogs even when they irk me. They are always full of passion – about what you think, what you see, what you hear, what you do. That’s what makes it so good for me, so keep it up, Scoble – I’ll be reading, talking back to my screen, chuckling, following links or in other other ways absorbing some of that passion.

  3. I’m guessing the Dave Sifry news is either about funding or a buyout. If I’m right then I’m very pleased for Dave who, as I’ve commented on my own blog, is probably the most responsive CEO I’ve ever come across on the internet.

So you two fluffy beach-ball brainless quasi-Marketing PR wonks are now automatically SEO experts, just because Google is blog-noise mucked to all ruin?

How people can tolerate your speeches is beyond me, they’d make my teeth hurt, lure of the celebrity, I imagine.

“Blog blogs, blogs, random temper tantrums (that 24 hours later render a grand apology), blogs, blogs, blogs, random outbursts, RSS is God, blogs, blogs, boycott journalists, blogs are all, yet another Dave Winer Stockholm Syndrome kick-in mode, blogs, and more blogs, bad audio and shaky cam fun, wheee. Oh, and (would you believe?) yet more blogs.”

It can be irritating when people send nasty comments but is it worth being frazzled. I personally started screening comments and trackbacks (even though I get only a few of them) after some improper ones came my way.
I think some commenters get nasty on purpose, thinking they will get some attention.
Our little headaches are not much compared to people who have to walk 6 miles a day to get their water. We are sometimes so wrapped up in our little world that we loose our perspective.
I do like your passionate side though.

OK, Shakespear, you are beginning to sound almost as “intelligible” as Steve Gillmor.

It does sound like wonderful poetry, though, whatever it means.

Yes, we would like to hear what those who advocate blogging have to say about search engine optimisation.

See Chris, we *can* ask Robert to tell us what he has been giving speeches about without being vicious about it.

What on earth did he do to you to in the dim and distant to make you so committed to giving him a hard time?

Or was it his evil twin who wronged you so?

  14. I knew a guy who played football at Notre Dame under Lou Holtz. Lou was always yelling at him to run faster, push harder, give more of an effort. One day he was frustrated and talked to an alum (NFL player) who gave him a good piece of advice:

“Be worried when he isn’t yelling at you, because then he doesn’t care.”

So don’t worry about those who yell at you. It takes just as much energy on their part to post flames as it does to post praise, but at least they care what you have to say.

  20. As Richie Brockleman used to say, the thing of it is is, Robert and Chris, they make this blog together.

We have had whole, long moments when Chris has actually been, er, nice.

Then Robert has systematically ignored him.

Then Chris has gone nasty again.

    Like now.

Sometimes, Chris has interesting things to say, snarky or not.

Chris is quite a show-off, he knows lots of stuff.

At some point in the past, he and Robert seem to have worked together, been friends.

Chris seems jealous of the attention Robert gets.

Chris, like his friend who calls himself Goebbels, does not seem to believe in Scoble’s policy of “putting your life online”.

These two simply don’t understand that if you get the “work-life balance” right (in this case, work-life balance means the precise mixture and quantity of things you write about your work and your life) then you WILL get the attention Robert gets.

They are also the grit in Robert’s oyster.

This site’s popularity is at least partially down to them.

So when Ballmer says his family aren’t allowed to use Google or Macs, he is showing that he doesn’t *get* Scoble’s implicit maxim, which is that your competitors (and Coulter and Goebbels are scoble’s competitors in this place) are your most inspiring stimulus, because they make you question your own beliefs.

  22. Ricky — when you called Coulter “Shakespeare” that cracked me up. So I have incorporated Coulter’s line in the following soliloquy:

O, ruinous clamor of indulgent self that fouls
    the veins of information sought.
‘Tis the insolence of indomitable ego,
feline images, shrill words of rage
that spurs the oppression of engines
of search, and leads our queries down
    ever-fettered, serpentine paths of despair.
Google is blog-noise mucked all to ruin.
    Once feted, now sicklied o’er.
And the feted stock of this enterprise
heir to dread, and decay, having fallen
    into eternal repose, succumb’d
to the evil they swore n’er to perform.

    Nobody wants him to be.

But there is a difference between not being a suck-up and what Chris does when he has nothing to say other than repeat fairly familiar terms of contempt.

Karim: please don’t encourage me, I get even more pompous if given encouragement.

If we were going to “attack Scoble’s advocacy of blogging”, for instance, we would have to find something NEW to criticise about “blogging as a panacea”, rather than merely once again tiresomely re-state our suspicions or distrust of corporate blogging as a policy.

Oh dear, I am having to lecture Chris Coulter on how to flame Scoble properly, what a troll I am.

It’s a “naked conversation”, conversations, as you know, do deal with differing outlooks and/or opinions. But score one for Robert for actually not censoring, lots of blogs aren’t as tolerant.

Socialist? Hardly, think more Alex P. Keatonish, Sean Hannityistic Reagan 80s kiddo (but the strong SEC with real teeth flavor), kinda PJ O’Rourke does Nick Carr, if you will. But I hate self-analysis of the blogger navel gazing sort. And my ‘folks’ are Dwight D. Eisenhower plenitude-era styled, no Boomer offspring LSD in the DNA here.

But only doing this in the render downtime, and got too many new projects to handle, so the armchair psychs can have a breather. Hate me for my Scoble comments, but show up at my movies. And anyone that knows Christopher Guest, drop him my name. 😉

I agree he’s been good for my blogging. If anything, his appearance used to be a good measure for if I said anything interesting. I’m still looking through this post amazed that I torqued his wrench, but that’s what makes the world go around.

I figure that from now on if I say the sky is overcast someone will argue with me about it.

But, anyway, what did David Sifry tell me? Nothing about business. It was a personal message between two people. It made me smile. I’m still having a good day because of the message, even after three talks with three very different audiences.

Anyway, on the ostensible topic of this thread …

There’s only one reason anybody writes, and that’s to be read. I read everything Scoble writes here, I bought his book and read it, and I read whatever he posts in our internal DLs. And most of the people who talk about what an idiot he is seem to do exactly the same. 🙂

  34. Sorry for hijacking the post, but I find it interesting to follow the whole Strumpette chaos, since you linked to it in your comments about the “Steve Rubel dead pool”. Well, I figured I’d check it out today and to see if the Strumpette vs. Edelman verbal battle is over. Well, it appears that Strumpette, aka Amanda Chapel, aka “Ms. Perky Boobs”, aka PR ho, either forgot to pay her web hosting bill or they’re shutting down her account. As of 2:40pm PST today here account is in “Account Suspended” status. While she’s the the #1 hit on Google for the search word “Strumpette” that doesn’t work either. Hmmmm, either the servers are getting hammered, Edelman has called in some favors or Amanda can’t pay her bills. I wonder if she isn’t attempting another Jennifer Cutler play and perhaps she could have a sugar daddy to pay her web hosting bill. Either way, I find the whole fiasco funny and sad at the same time. Makes me wonder if this isn’t just an Edelman vs. competitor blog, which would be more noise rather than sites that truly bring value.

Alas, I guess if you pose and talk about your purported sexcapades then you might get yourself a book deal and perhaps movie deal. Wonder if a 40-year old, bald dude could parlay that somehow? Nah, my boobs aren’t perky. Back to real work….

I don’t “make” them, I write them. Difference, like as in DGA vs. WGA. But I know the pipeline so it’s no idle boast, but then it can be a shark-filled town, things greenlight or optioned can still languish for years, and, plus, I am outside of the promised-land now (LA). So yeah, good point (point taken), until it’s gold, shalt not “brag”. Lesson Microsoft could learn as well. 😉

I would absolutely refuse giving them to you.

Well then I will just have to make another fort, better and bigger. Or storm the castle walls (which isn’t as easy).
