This iPhone app is for wine lovers

Yesterday I went to the SF Vitners Market, which was a large event with about 100 wineries. I’m enjoying learning about wine, and while there I met up with the team from SocialGrapes.com, which just released a new version of its iPhone app that turns finding wine into a social experience. I’m quite enjoying the app. It uses the scanning technology from RedLaser to let you scan the barcode of the bottle of wine you’re considering buying and see what your friends have said about it. You can follow me here, although I just started using it.

While there I met Christine Hinkley Trice, who has built a Facebook community with 110,000 members for mothers who want to drink wine. She’s using the app and praises it. Her community has embedded the SocialGrapes’ app into it, so she can share her finds with her community there.

After talking with Christine, I talk with founder Marc Gascon who tells me what they are trying to do with SocialGrapes.

Anyway, some of you are into wine, or are looking for wine for Thanskgiving or holiday parties and this is a great way to learn more.

  1. Great post Robert!

For the Nat Decants Wine Reviews, Pairings and Recipes app, I tested tested thousands of food and wine combinations over the past 12 years as a wine journalist … I’m a thoroughly hedonistic researcher 🙂

Under the Food category, users of the app will find a category called “Turkey Dinner” which pairs wines with the bird and all the side dishes. Apple has chosen the app for it’s “Holiday Cooking” apps and it’s featured on BlackBerry’s Carousel. I hope you’ll take a look.

    Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

    Cheers,
    Natalie

  3. @Scobleizer! Hope you enjoyed the SF Vintners Market – always an awesome time.Would love your opinion on the free Hello Vino app – available on both iPhone & Android. We took a much different approach than all the other wine apps… we help you with a wine recommendation when you don’t know where to start. Say, if you’re stuck in the wine aisle trying to choose from the hundreds of bottles. We also have social recommendations from other Hello Vino users!http://www.hellovino.com/wine-mobileWould love to share a glass next time you’re up in SF.Cheers!Rick from Hello Vino@HelloVino

  4. Neato, a generic social-something app that makes wine snobs even snobbier.

I don’t care about the supposed wisdom of the snobs-of-a-feathers, whatever Robert Hess (cocktails over just dull wine) thinks that works for me. Drinkboy as app, and I am there.

  5. Hi Robert, Sorry to make this comment on this blog post instead of your post titled “Test run: Techcrunch guest post: Do you +really+ use all those mobile apps?” but you turn comments off your older blog posts really fast! But there’s just something I wanted to address in that older article.

You said, “Search on the iPhone sucks because it mixes in contacts with apps.” It’s true that that’s the default, but if you go in your iPhone 4 to Settings/General/Spotlight Search, you can control what comes up in search results. For example, I set mine to only show applications. That way it doesn’t mix contacts with apps in search results.

    Make sense?

  6. What a great app, especially now that the holidays is upon us, and parties are cropping out by the numbers. This will be of great help when we seek out wine favors for party hosts, and we can actually find out if this is the exact wine they might enjoy.
