Is your startup in stealth? You gotta know LaunchRock

Eric Ries told me something very interesting in a two-part interview I did with him (part I, part II), which is a core principle of his “lean startup” methodology: why waste your time coding if you don’t even know if anyone is interested?

How do you know if anyone is interested?

Put up a website for your stealth startup and see if anyone signs up!

How do you do that? Use LaunchRock. Here CEO Jameson Detweiler shows me how it builds you a site that can do just that. And a bit more.

So, what does it do?

Well, it builds a great looking site for you to put onto Techcrunch and it keeps track of who signs up for your product and where they came from. Simple, huh? Yeah, but why not do that yourself?

Well, why waste time on setting up a mailing list, building a website, etc etc when you are in a race to get your core product done?

Highly recommended for startups.

  1. Do not understand.

If you have a website that is good enough to get on techcrunch, then your team of devs should be able to hack out a launch page in about 2 minutes.

If you are having trouble making a launch page, then your facebook killer is probably not gonna happen.

    1. Two minutes? I think you have no clue about how long it takes to build a website that can handle the loads that Techcrunch or Oprah or other launch vehicles can bring. This is work that startups should outsource to others and LaunchRock is a great place to start.

      1. That’s the thing, why take the time to do it when you don’t have to?

Beyond that though, it’s not quite as simple as you might think. We handle all of the referral tracking and inserting the links into the Twitter and Facebook buttons. Then we give you analytics on the backend.

Then there’s the other things we do too. Starting this week we’re giving you an address book importer and sending out invites by email. Then we have analytics (basic now, but going to be building out a lot of cool things here), integration with RapLeaf so you can better understand your users, sweet Posterous integration and more.
