Why should we let it all hang out?
It’s something we’ve been arguing about lately as Facebook becomes more and more powerful. After all, if I say I like music by Neil Young on my Facebook status message (assuming I’ve set my privacy so that only my friends and family can see my messages) then you can’t study my behavior or beliefs and you certainly can’t look through all of Facebook and find all users who’ve said they like Neil Young.
But if I said the same thing over on Twitter you can build systems to show who has liked Neil Young. Today Research.ly turned on a system that gives people very powerful access.
The Next Web said “Research.ly: Twitter analytics, sentiment and trend tracking done right.”
I totally agree.
When you watch the exclusive video I did with Research.ly’s founders, you’ll see just how powerful this service is. You can look for items in real time, and filter out the non-important ones, looking at just the people you’re following, if you want, or all Twitter users, or just the people following your account. I’m following about 27,000 geeks, for instance, so using Research.ly is very awesome because I can see just what they are talking about in the news.
For brands this is going to be invaluable.
Read the Next Web report and watch the video I did. Make sure your social media guru sees this. It’s very significant.
Unfortunately it’s not free, will cost about $99 a month to get started, but for brands (and for journalists) who want to be able to instantly see what people are talking about — filtered and graphed — this is crack. I’m going to pay the fee because it’ll let me do journalism with Twitter that other people won’t be able to do, especially when added to tools like Storify or Curated.by.
What do you think?
At first blush, looks like wow + Holy Grail.
Biggest thing is going to be cutting through the clutter – the bots, the spam, the MLM crap – and adding real value.
I REALLY like. Thanks for the tip.

It would be more than interesting to see a meta analysis, and as such a categorized directory of frequent twitter users by Job Title, Industry they work in, Topics they frequently tweet about, and Location. Maybe that would require more than Twitter as a data source – say Linkedin too? In addition some smart semantic parsing as opposed to mere content search?

I’ve been talking to the founder of http://www.collecta.com since we both attend Twiistup and various events in LA for tech, and you can essentially use his service for free to do a lot of the same kinds of things.
So there are a lot of features that go above and beyond the Twitter hash tag search, but there are many sites that handle these kind of peripheral services for free. Collecta.com is probably my favorite since I have a line of communication with the founder.

Love the service think is a very important step although an expensive one as well. Because the 99 version will not be enough for real data. Data that you can search on again and again. Say you are using this service for 2 years. With the 99 version you can’t go back to two years that can be very useful within organisations.
Looking forward to the marriage between website analytics software, SCRM, social media tools like hootsuite and services like research.ly. This will bring really mind blowing power to your vingertips.
Some great challenges:
– Language barrier, the online world is so much bigger then English alone and a lot of companies are multilingual working in a global world. (real time translation and language analitics needed)
– Closed but important systems. They are dependent on their cooperation. This is a weakness. I could think of twitter saying that they have to pay bigtime to the firehose feed. Without it the service is dead. This should be a nr1 revenue stream for twitter.

Hi Luke,
We appreciate your comments and opinion; and thanks for the compliment on the interview!
As for identifying ‘key influencers’ or the ‘most interesting people in the room’, part of what ReSearch.ly does is an analysis of what those people are saying, and how they’re connecting. It’s true that for influencers, ‘being social’ is often second-nature in real life but it’s also important for us to understand how they’re sharing and connecting on the social web. With ReSearch.ly, we listen for those conversations around certain interests/topics to build/identify communities.
We hope that you will try ReSearch.ly with a free trial, and we welcome your comments on the product experience.
Cheers,
