I was just at Twitter’s headquarters where they announced a new design. I have the only video of the press conference. You can watch here:

I’ll have a deeper post on the good and bad later, but here’s my first impressions:
Overall design: good. I like this overall.
Keyboard shortcuts: good. That makes reading down lists, homepage, and retweet pages a lot faster.
Threaded conversations: good, but could be more.
Retweet page: bad and good. Doesn’t show me how many people are retweeting an item unless I click on the tweet.
List support. bad. It doesn’t add much and makes me click more to get from Twitter.com to all my lists.
Suggested follows: bad. The “people we suggest to follow” page isn’t in the new style yet and no improvements here that I can see.
Infinite scroll: good, you can scroll down forever. Well, @dougw says that there’s a limit, but I haven’t gotten to the end yet.
Home page detail pane: bad, I really could care less about who is following me, or what the latest lame Twitter trends are. Let me get rid of those things I don’t care about and let me add things that mean more to me (like lists).
Follow/follower pages: good. Shows bios and is nicer now.
Anyway, I’m sure there will be lots of feedback on this new design. Techmeme is already going crazy.

May be the reason twitter has ‘follow’ as an option unlike ‘Add as Friend’ as on Facebook which is friendly to connect with someone!

Sounds like a widget design would deal better with peoples needs, otherwise you just throw it all in and the whole page becomes busy and takes forever to render.

Thanks for the live video feed of the presser – really appreciate you connecting us to the live event! Nice recap too. I also really like the List feature and could care less about ‘trending topics’; would be great to be able to customize the profile page a bit.

Thanks for the video and review. At first, I thought that the new UI may eliminate the need to use third party clients like Tweetdeck to get the most out of Twitter.Based on the video and your review here, it does not appear to be so.

for vocabulary sake, we’re calling the main right hand side the dashboard… and the overlay panel that slides over it is the “details pane”… usually activated by clicking on a tweet.

How much are we on the site vs clients?
For me it’s seesmic web, tweetdeck, mobile app, ipad app, Flipboard, and then twitter.com (when rapidly looking up a person’s handle).

If you are a developer, and you have been living under a rock this whole year, Don’t Write Anything on Top of the Twitter API. It’s become absolutely useless.
(Twitter is obviously going for the end user experience all the way. DataSift, the-other-guys-with-the-magazine-layout are building on top of clay. Just saying.)

The Mini profiles view is already there I am seeing whenever I get new profiles in the suggestions area. However the related content option is what attracts me more. Because as they say, it helps in identifying the replies to a tweet, geographical information etc..which now will purify the bulk spammer section and will help identify the real authenticated profiles.
