Developers: how will we all get along with Twitter’s annotation feature?

Today at the Twitter Chirp Hack Day I talked with a ton of developers and the new feature they were most interested in. Adam Jackson echoed everyone I’ve heard today when he tweeted “Twitter Annotations is what I’ve been wanting FOREVER.”

We’ll be posting those interviews next week on building43 but there’s a lot of questions and not a whole lot of answers as to what Annotations are, so I figured I’d post what I learned today.

First, Annotations let Twitter clients attach metadata onto a Tweet.

Some things I’ve learned:

1. Annotations can be up to 512 bytes in length (although that limit hasn’t been decided for certain yet). That would let you put slightly more characters into the metadata payload than would be allowed in a tweet.
2. The metadata can ONLY be written at the time the Tweet is published and can NOT be changed or written later.
3. To get around limitations of non-updateability developers are already working on systems to point out from the metadata to other systems that CAN be updated.
4. Twitter has not disclosed how this metadata will be displayed yet (this feature will only be available to developers at first, later will be turned on first on Twitter.com and maybe not used at first on Twitter’s other clients).
5. There aren’t many rules as to what can be in this metadata. YET. All the devs I’ve talked to say they expect Twitter to “bless” namespaces so the industry will have one common way to describe common things. More on that in a second, but Steven Hodson already explained well why this new metadata payload could turn into a nightmare for Twitter. Twitter has already started communicating about some of the rules that will be coming.
6. Annotations won’t be available until next quarter, in other words, at least not until July.
7. Not sure what the experience would be like on all Twitter clients (obviously they won’t be able to be delivered to SMS clients, for instance).
8. There are a few more details already on the Twitter Development Talk list.

So, what could this be used for?

Well, let’s just imagine a developer comes up with something new he’d like to build into his clients. For instance, today at Chirp it was sunny, so I came up with a feature for describing the weather at the location where you’re tweeting from.

The old way of describing the weather was to say “nice weather in San Francisco” in a Tweet. But that takes almost 30 characters of your 140 to do.

So, why not build a new iPhone app that lets you select the weather when you tweet? (Or, even better, automatically go out to an API at weather.com or something like that, grab the current weather for the location you’re at, and shove that into the annotations metadata payload).

Sound simple enough? It is.

Except what if my app describes sunny weather this way:

weather=sunny

but some other developer wants to describe it this way:

weather=nice

And yet another developer wants to describe it this way:

weather=80 degrees fahrenheit with no clouds

And yet another developer wants to describe it this way:

weather=blue sky

Get the problem? Every client would need to figure out what the string in the metadata really was trying to say and they each might get it wrong, or might not work because some other developer used a format they weren’t expecting.

So, now, we have to have an industry conference for deciding on the right way to describe weather and we need to argue about it forever which will keep everyone from shipping a client that actually works and does something useful for users. Damn, all I wanted to do was put a nice sunny logo on my tweet in Tweetie!

Imagine this argument happening for everything.

Television show=”Lost”
Movie=”Kick Ass”
Location=”1 Market, San Francisco, CA”

I can imagine lots of ways to describe each of these things, can’t you?

Heck, to IMDB “Kick Ass” is actually “http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1250777/

And so on, and so forth. Mahendra gave some other examples of how Annotations could be used.

But it gets worse than that.

I might want to point my tweets at a commenting system, but Disqus will use a different code than JS-Kit will. So, now we’ll have different commenting systems that can’t be replaced later. What if Disqus goes out of business, or changes their strategy or name? Now my old Tweets won’t work?

One nice thing is Twitter’s dev team is taking an open approach with this. They want to hear from developers on their development talk page (just opened) about how you’ll want to use this new feature.

My real question is “can we all get along?”

Why is this important? Well, this lets developers build new curation, bundling, and other systems. I hope the industry can get it right.

  1. As soon as it's available, I'll be using it when auto-posting posts from Phreadz to Twitter to add (from the top of my head):1) A 'mimetype' to describe the type of post being linked to. (photo, video, audio, etc.) 2) A thumbnail url (if one exists) 3) Categories and tags4) The source5) The original poster's name (and twitter name if they have that linked too) – also link to social graph info of linked networks, and any other opted-in info. 6) An array of the 'path' of the thread (ie: in reply to in reply to in reply to, etc..7) Link to RSS and JSON feed of replies.8) Link to OPML feed/tree of the whole thread (however it may be branched).*9) 'emotion' (somehow)We'll no doubt see a lot of 'noise' and tags that hardly ever get used. But the platforms which send out the data AND document the 'schema' of the tags they send will get the most benefit from this.Then we're going to see some VERY rich clients out there. Then the best of those will probably get bought by Twitter 😉 – heh! *joke* (kinda)

  2. Flickr will be able to add tags like : Camera make, model, f-stop setting etc. At the end of the day, Twitter will win: since they'll have direct (and sometimes protected) access to that data – which will become of great value eventually.

  3. Working with developers, I think a lot can be done with annotations. My personal preference, though is that a tweet is a tweet is 140 characters of text and its up to us to be creative and do what we wish. I think Twitter's big draw is its simplicity and if it starts getting multi dementional, will that simplicity be lost? Guess it remains to be seen…Garry

Retweets had no central organizing authority and they turned out just fine, EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE EXPOSED TO END USERS.Metadata that is only accessible through the API at first should be just fine.Ad hoc solutions will be cobbled together. Twitter will eventually codify the best. To quote Peter Pan and BSG: “All of this has happened before, and it will all happen again.” This ain't no big deal, and you know it.

  5. The solution to this is to use controlled vocabularies. Well known collections of keywords used to describe various metadata. Using annotations to point to a site that stores the key/value pairs selected at tweet time would be extremely powerful.I'm going to think about this and write it up at my blog. 🙂

  6. The way I saw it as far as my use is to geo-tag, hashtag and set my mood (remember livejournal?) then be able to extract that data into my own CSV file. Then not only search by “soma” but by what tweets were sent in San Francisco on a Friday at 5PM where I mentioned “beer” That's that kind of data I want FOREVER and to look back 10 years from now and have that data is the ultimate diary or time capsule and person who lifestreams can use.

  7. Sounds like the same kind of problem that linked data (e.g. RDF) developers have already solved. Good quality meta-data will link to its ontologies as well as contain the data payload.The best, most trust-worthy ontologies will get supported and referenced by a wide variety of twitter clients, just like freebase, dbpedia, freedb get lots of references in everybody's linked data documents.This is a great move by twitter and I can't wait to see what cool and useful apps people will come up with next.

  8. Folks, This shouldn't be a big deal. Solution — metadata descriptions (part of the developer profile on twitter) that can be retrieved by 3rd party's, for the metadata being used.Facebook (had) used template-bundles for something similar. If the client can read the metadata description, it can then decide how to read the tweet-specific metadata (the tweet-specific metadata could contain a descriptor id perhaps). Everyone wins!

  9. exactly, well said. seems like a trivial solution, perhaps twitter could have an 'ontology directory' that'd describe the types of metadata being used and how popular each of them are.

  10. Yes, they wont go through twitter (cause Twitter, sadly, isnt the center of the universe). We were adding metadata to tweets long before the announcement. Semantics has to cover content as a whole not just tweets, and its also personal (ie your tag for “sunny” may refer to something completely different from my tag for it).   11. I've done quite a lot of work with metadata and semantic content in UK heritage web context. It should be relatively easy in theory!Factual works better than subjective eg “nice day” has multiple meaning and can be very subjective (eg lots of people think it's a “nice day” when 30 Centigrade and cloudless skies, but I find that really uncomfortable weather).

  12. There is probably a middle ground between standardization and free-form. Annotations could have an xml-like schema with pre-defined tags and room for arbitrary extensions.An example of how such annotation schema could look like is provided by Cascaad's contextualization API (developer.cascaad.com), which provides for any tweet some additional metadata, including a relevance score and the semantic entities automatically extracted from the message.

  13. Statements like “Twitter Annotations is what I’ve been wanting FOREVER.” mystify me. Twitter on its own WON'T, and when you really think about it, CAN'T solve the semantic problem.. Tweets are just includes under a tag, along wityh FB statuses, LinkedIn statuses YouTube vids ans what have you..

I was commenting on the utility of remote database solutions (not just Fluid) to store meta data on any URL, I like the idea but it separates the thing (in this case a tweet) from the additional info many of us would like to bundle with it. So now interested parties that follow my tweets also would have to subscribe to a remote DB. It's much more flexible if I just subscribe and got real time updates with rsscloud or push. Then I can choose to abrev the first X characters or title for fast scanning. I suspect distributed follow models will be how the web goes social.

  18. Annotations would only work if we all worked to define a standard, all of that works in favor more for twitter than developers. Devs are already doing meta layers on top of twitter and the win there is that they are finding a way to retain some unique/competitive advantages over just giving that data to twitter to play with. I have a hard time seeing the advantage in giving twitter your meta data, especially in light of recent dev developments, why give them your meta data other than to tell them what to make and take over once it masses get to the point where twitter deems “we're doing this for the users” and take over and compete with your very meta layer concept.I feel like you run the risk of spilling your meta data to the open funnel of twitter, and then who really owns that data once its out, twitter can leverage it more than you can and they can put everyone on equal footing and then put themselves above that. Annotations is another trojan horse for developers.

  19. I think there are amazing opportunities in Twitter's new annotation feature. I am awestruck by the potential of developers applying Linked Data / Semantic Web schema and using RDF in Twitter annotations. It would massively scale search effectiveness and distribution opportunities while allowing sophisticated on-the-fly analysis of Twitter's firehose & other feeds. The Twitter ecosystem is particularly suited to applying principles of the Semantic Web in that machine interpolated meaning could be continually refined the more humans tweet & retweet about the same and related topics; coupled with author, location, hashes, platform, and temporal information.The vision of Semantic Web is occasionally dismissed as long on dream and short on practice. However, early implementations are gaining significant traction and offering substantive value to early adopters. Thompson Reuters, no slouch in the business of information, was quite visionary in acquiring the now @OpenCalais service. The mostly free service is currently identifying semantic entities in over 5 million documents submitted to it per day. @zemanta is also finding a significant user base among bloggers for its related services.Twitter annotations may well be a turning point in the early practical application of Tim Berners-Lee’s 1999 “dream for the Web [in which computers] become capable of analyzing all the data on the Web – the content, links, and transactions between people and computers.”It is all about the metadata!
