Appcelerator, which is a company that makes a developer tool/platform for developing native mobile and desktop apps by using HTML, Javascript, and its own API library, tonight is announcing Apple Tablet support and has also taken a poll of its 18,000 developers and found that 90% of its developers said they plan to build a Tablet application over the coming year. Also that most of its developers have already put Apple Tablet development behind iPhone and Android platform, but ahead of Blackberry, Palm Pre, Windows Mobile, and Symbian.

VentureBeat has all the details on their survey and other fun things they learned.

OK, nothing really shocking there, but I did sit down for an interview with CEO Jeff Haynie this afternoon.

In the interview Haynie explains why his developer platform is a lot faster to develop on than building apps in Objective-C (developers use standard web technologies, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, along with its own API, named Appcelerator Titanium, that is easy to call from JavaScript to do a variety of functions. You can watch a video where they explain more about how this works.

Basically Appcelerator is a competitor for Adobe’s AIR framework/app system but one that delivers onto the iPhone (and, within a few days, on the Apple Tablet, or whatever it’ll be called).

Yes Haynie is taking advantage of the Apple news, even before it happens, but I gotta appreciate that in a CEO.

Finally, in his survey they found that most of their developers see lots of opportunities for the Apple Tablet outside of the kinds of scenarios already discussed. We talk about these at length in the interview, but while gaming will be hot they see opportunities to develop new apps in entertainment, productivity/business, social networking, and education.

  1. I wonder how many of the 100 thousand + announced iphone apps are “fake” apps. How many services are there out there where you can create your own app store application for $29 or something like that. Just enter you RSS feed and customize the name and click submit and you have added an app to the apple app store.

  3. Apple Tablet Support? Did Apple release an SDK already for the Tablet? I do agree than you can get a pre-platform device, but without specs of the device how was it possible? Or did you get a sneak peek at the Apple Tablet too 😛

  12. An excellent interview, but let's talk about the survey numbers for a second. In the Venture Beat article it is pointed out that of the 18K developers only 3% or 554 developers responded. That's a terribly low response rate. So the 90% of developers building for the Tablet only applies to those 554. Of 18K devs, only 498.6 report planning to build a Tablet app.Statistically, when a survey is conducted a 25% response rate would be considered low, so a 3% response rate is almost non existent.Now we can say that of 18K devs, with 554 responding, 498.6 or 2.7% of those devs report plans for Tablet apps this year. Numbers are funny that way.But that's just the numbers side of this story. Appcelerator is an interesting startup, and this is an excellent interview.

    1. Holbrook et al. (2005) assessed whether lower response rates are associated with less unweighted demographic respresentativeness of a sample. By examining the results of 81 national surveys with response rates varying from 5 percent to 54 percent, they found that surveys with much lower response rates were only minimally less accurate.

      As a result of these and other such recent findings, it now seems clear that a low response rate does not guarantee lower survey accuracy and instead simply indicates a risk of lower accuracy. Consumers of survey results are therefore cautioned to view response rates as informative but to recognize that these rates “do not necessarily differentiate reliably between accurate and inaccurate data.”

JBoss), Rob Bearden (ex-COO JBoss), Marc Fleury (ex-CEO & Founder JBoss) & a few other ex-JBoss'ers. Appcelerator is definitely one to watch.

  14. Good move from Appcelerator marketing guys to benefit from the mounting hype surrounding Apple’s tablet to pitch their native cross-platform development tool for Javascript developers

    I wish we would have done the same thing to promote our ELIPS Studio 3 toolkit that similarly allows Actionscript developers (read: Flash / Flex developers) to build native mobile apps for iPhone, Android, Symbian and Windows Mobile

  16. Thanks for the interview with Jeff, Robert.I've been using Appcelerator for a couple of months now to build a rich social multimedia app for iPhone and Android on top of the Phreadz API. I've been amazed at what they've made possible for me as a non-Java, non-ObjectiveC programmer to build. It's absolutely the best kit out there.   17. As I'm looking at Apple's stock right now it has risen 8 percent from the opening bell. Yesterday it rose as well. It's fun to look at the stock price of Apple right before they make a major announcement.

  18. We only gave 48 hours via email notice (which traditionally has a less than 10% click through rate) on the response so you'd expect the number to be low. Also, it's a statically significant number either way.

  19. The bottom boundary in what you've posted here is 5%. Also, don't you think that if the group who performed the survey is reporting the response rate that leaving that out gives an inaccurate impression? Also, there are no statistics provided in these survey outcomes which would allow generalizing the responses to the full 18K population. What is the confidence level of the results – for example.It would be informative to include the number of respondents.

  21. Just started playing around with Appcelerator and I'm very impressed. Took just minutes to build a UI framework for a prototype iPhone app that had taken me hours with XCode and Interface Builder. I'll admit to being a novice iPhone developer – which is EXACTLY why this development platform is so appealing to me. Thanks for the post Robert! I wouldn't have heard about these folks otherwise (unless, of course, Apple is planning to release it as part of a new app building framework).

  25. See the madness of the people who are marching towards DOOM because of the CLOSED Apple platform??? Well, maybe not so much.It's quite an extraordinary thing, though, how Jobs gets all this publicity for his products by shutting down communication from his engineers. Maybe a genuine leak or two to WSJ and some from the partners. The rest, the madness of those who think different. The man is a Zen master.

  26. I am excited about anything Apple. I’ve been waiting for this a couple of years. I like to read and turn pages but if this does what it is anticipated to do, i’ll seriously consider getting it. I like the larger size for a reader, harder to lose. i like my iTouch but I would like a bigger screen, old eyes need bigger print.
