SXSW 2009 will be known as the “SMS & location explosion SXSW”

This week tons of people were asking me “what’s the ‘Twitter’ of this year’s SXSW conference. See, two years ago at SXSW Twitter exploded onto the scene.

Looking back at this year’s conference (pretty tough cause I partied a little too hard with my new friends at Rackspace) it’s clear that this year is going to be remembered for when location exploded onto the scene.

First, everyone’s iPhones didn’t work very well for the first two days of the conference. Turned out that AT&T’s network was overloaded. I met the guy who fixed much of that problem on Sunday (they doubled the network capacity and turned on some new wireless bandwidth). That reminded me of the “Twitter SXSW” when Twitter itself was slow and went down a few times during the show.

But, that’s not the reason why this will be remembered as the “SMS & location explosion SXSW.”

First, it’ll be all the talk about a new app that got its first hype here at SXSW: Foursquare. Techcrunch wrote that up today. What is it? It’s a social app that you report via SMS where you are and it uses that info to build a little game with your friends. Lots of people were talking about it.

When I visited Governor Rick Perry along with a couple of other bloggers Chris Brogan was watching me use Ourdoings to email photos in from my iPhone, which posts them to my friendfeed stream along with a map of where that photo was shot, and he said “why aren’t you using Pixelpipe?” That’s an iPhone app that lets you upload groups of photos when you find available bandwidth. He said it was very valuable to him at SXSW when the iPhone often had very little or no available bandwidth (inside the capital building while we were visiting the governor we had the same problem).

Another app that got some attention at SXSW was CONTXTS, which are mobile SMS business cards. Daniel Graf showed me this. He asked for my phone number, SMS’d that to a number that CONTXTS uses and instantly a note came to my phone with his contact info. Very cool and useful for networking at conferences.

Here, you can try it with my phone. It asked me to “TELL YOUR FRIENDS TO TXT SCOBLEIZER TO 50500.” Now you’ll see how it works and you’ll get my contact information sent back to you.

So, how about you? Did you see any cool location-based services used at SXSW for the first time? There were a ton, like Google Latitude, or Radar, from Tiny Pictures.

Why don’t we list the coolest ones here, or on my friendfeed link, which I’ll post shortly?

  1. Pixelpipe is more than an iPhone app. They give you lots of different ways to upload photos, and to a variety of sites too. You could just plug the email address you use for OurDoings into Pixelpipe.

  3. We launched a beta of our location-based mobile web app at SXSW. It’s called SHUB, works on ANY web-enabled phone (no GPS or download), and uses your Facebook profile (no registration). It will post your location to Twitter and Facebook, show you who else is at your location or area, and tell you where your friends are.

Robert – I tried to give you a flyer at the ACC but your hands were full. We got great feedback from those who tried it.

  5. Contxts really took the conference by storm. My friend, Danny Newman, Contxts founder, estimates almost 1/2 of the attendees signed up for an account.

FourSquare was awesomely fun. By adding a gaming component and the feeling of action, which made it just more fun to use (and overall more useful). Brightkite on the other hand has a voyeur feeling – which led to my comment that FourSquare makes Brightkite look like Linkedin. Useful in a certain context, but overall kinda boring.

There didnt seem to be anything else that really exploded on the scene in the way that Contxts and FourSquare did.

  9. Filemobile offers a compelling broadcast citizen journalism solution for media companies. Accepting any content from any device, when geo tagged, that media or user can be mapped. The solution offers white label gallery, mobile application and broadcast integration. It’s powerful to see a cellphone shoot a video, send it into this service, and have it posted to the web, and retranscoded on the fly into broadcast ready MPEG2. Very cool stuff, check it out: http://www.filemobile.com/solutions/citizenjournalism

  13. Just a friendly heads-up. Don’t know if it is Scobleizer’s computers, Fastcompany.com or what – but somewhere along the line your video feeds are being terribly stingy with band-width: As in watch PAUSE watch PAUSE PAUSE PAUSE….sometimes its really bad.

Love the content!!! I found you watching your recent interview with Leo Laporte. But I can’t take this anymore. (The LaPorte feed of your interview was squirly as well) Just as a sanity check I opened an MSNBC video fee in Foxfire, and everything was nice and smooth.

I will not be upset at all if you pull this post down – but only if you take to heart — get the feed fixed or you’ll loose a lot of eyeballs. I’ll check back with you one more time in a week or two and give Scobleizer one more shot at my attention. Fastcompany won’t rate anymore clicks from me unless I see Scobleizer up then. Good luck!

PPS – I’ve got AT&T DSL-lite – Doesn’t take huge amounts of data; but like I said before MSNBC is perfectly fine: so maybe there is some kind of caching issue for lite DSL like mine?? – but other competing media providers seem to come to my DSL smooth – so I would expect you to as well.

Keep up the content – I really hope you make the caching palatable!

  15. Sorry, I no longer work at Fast Company so can’t control that. Going forward, though, I will pick much more scalable solutions. But, there is a way to get to the videos: click on the video page and you’ll find a download link. You can download the whole video and then watch it off of your hard drive, so you won’t have any troubles.

JFYI one of the companies that I work with as part of Dan’l Lewin’s team, DubMeNow, has built a pretty sweet mobile contact exchange with native versions for iPhone, WinMo, RIM, and also SMS. What’s coolest to me about them is the ability to post a group code at an event and have all attendees instantly swap contact info–would have been cool for a lot of the core conversations at SXSWi. Andrew Hyde from TechStars mentioned wishing he had something like this as a group list after his “happiness” core con.” Best wishes for Building 43!

  23. I read about foursquare on TechCrunch. It seems pretty cool, but I'm still one of those people who likes that the tech is out there but doesn't want to use it all the time. Part of me thinks: if my friends want to know where I am, they can call me. If I don't want them to know where I am, I can not pick up. Foursquare obviously isn't that invasive- but it is definitely a sign of things to come.
