Why I haven’t posted for two weeks

TechCrunch has the news tonight: Scoble to leave Fast Company.

Back in 2003 I wrote a Corporate Blogging Manifesto. Rule #13 is “don’t write if your life is in turmoil.”

It’s even harder to write when you are negotiating for stuff. But it’s really harder when you also are trying to deal with your career while continuing to do your job. This week I uploaded something like 20 videos to Fast Company TV. Whew! I am visiting as many companies as I can as quickly as I can (yesterday I saw two more, today I’m visiting another three) so that I can get a good bead on what I should build next and also to get some ideas of where to take my blog.

I’m building up quite a white board of things I’m going to do here. One thing is I’ll be moving off of WordPress.com soon to a hosted version of WordPress. That way I can really play with some of the newer plugins and widgets that I haven’t been able to use here.

Also, I’m really loving the new low-cost cameras like the Flip Mino HD, which costs about $200. Almost all of my most recent videos on Fast Company TV were shot on these low-cost cameras.

Anyway, I can’t talk about what I’m doing next yet because it’s not completely decided. I’m working on that and hope it’s in shape so we can announce something at the SXSW conference.

Oh, one thing I’ve learned over the past year, and especially this past month, is who my real friends are. Thanks to Bob Safian at Fast Company for helping guide me (I’ll still be writing a column for Fast Company thanks to him and David Lidsky, my editor). Kudos to Rocky Barbanica, who was my producer. In the past couple of weeks I’ve learned I can’t replace him by not sleeping. My editing sucks and it’s good to have someone thinking about shots, audio, and all that. Thanks to Seagate for being a dream sponsor the past two years. They did everything I asked them to do and they rarely asked me to do anything in return and they made doing hundreds of videos per year possible. Seagate deserves lots of credit for supporting the startups who always got on my show for free thanks to their sponsorship (lots of other places, like the Demo Conference, charge startups to get access to the audiences they’ve aggregated). Thanks to Brian and Julie over at Seagate for all the great support over the years we’ve been partnering together.

Well, onward, I’ll be back here more soon. Thanks!

  1. Real friends are far and few between. They say that you get to know the person the most within 5 minutes of first meeting (interactions). After that you just cant tell homey.

They just be lots of haters out there nowadays, and really jealous ones…

    Bring it to ’em…

  3. Best of luck Robert and kudos for calling out your “real friends” during times of turmoil. People’s true colors shine through when times get tough.

Whatever is next for you will definitely be interesting to watch.

Maybe you could become director and start making fiction movies too, not just documentaries?

  9. Robert, Good luck with your future endevors! I was wondering why you were so silent about Seagate lately and thought it had to do with all the problems they are (were?) having with the new drives, but we now see a glimpse of what was going on.

If in the future you have a need for a Moose with random knowledge, some programming skill, some marketing skills and well, just lots of randomness, please contact me =)

  15. Robert: A couple years ago when we met (gee was it really 2 years since WOMConf SF?) I learned something very important from one Robert Scoble. That key piece of wisdom was in essence “Don’t be afraid to move forward, no matter what is at stake.”

At the time you were just getting ready to kick the door open on your gig at MS. You were excited, giddy really. You were at a pretty high profile as the ubervlogger dude.

You have now taken that whole idea and blown it out the window, creating a category of media that makes a difference with people, simply by sitting down and having conversations with you. It is an inspiration to others like me, who are tiptoeing out there in producing cool media.

Keep learning, keep teaching, bro. I know I’ve learned a lot by watching your career and your work, and feel like “hell, if he can keep moving through his stuff, I can too.” That is an important skill and gift.

I hope I can have you on ScottsBigMouth on RootsUpRadio.com soon. After all, I haven’t exactly nailed down the video angle of the community media work in Chicago yet, and we need to pick that huge kick-ass brain of yours for the audience’s benefit. 😉

    Best,

  22. This is just my own experience and observations … but you fell off my radar when you joined FastCompany. As much as I LOVE their magazine (a subscriber) I rarely visit the website or catch FC videos. I”m sure you have outstanding content there … but it never bubbles up on my radar. One of those rare things where I enjoy the traditional platform (magazine) more than the web version. I’m connected to thousands on Twitter, and I rarely see anyone chatting about FastCompany.com or FastCompanyTV.

That being said, I think your departure from FC will free you up to do what you do best … be that free bird advance social media/technology scout and early adopter that pops up on everyone’s radar.

    Suggestion: I know you adore Friendfeed and cannot understand why everyone isn’t as smitten as you are … but you should tweet more. It’s where so many newbies to social media begin their journey, and you scooted away before it hit its stride. Twitter dominates the news buzz cycle for good reasons. Friendfeed does not, and never will IMHO. It owes any success to Twitter, and that’s pretty much a one way street. People do not discover Friendfeed first, then discover Twitter, do they? {begin quoting Friendfeed growth rates … now:-}

    Good Luck!

One thing that you CAN clarify – as I’m looking at your blog right now, the footer lists a number of Mansueto Digital Network properties. Will the footer remain when you return to your sole role of Fast Company columnist? And am I correct in assuming that you, and not Mansueto, retain rights to the scobleizer.com domain?

Interesting to note that I have been thinking about many of the same things myself, about new opps, moving my own blog from WP.com to self-host and the little Flip Mino HD (which I might finally be getting within next couple weeks). Best of luck with all that you have going on – there are a lot of us audience members who are wishing you the very best! But with your vast skills, no doubt your next move will be at least as exciting and rewarding and probably moreso.

  83. Your one of my fave tweeters. i hope all goes well. Forced changes have always worked out my way, with lots of worry in between. I would never got into the games industry without being fired by the lawyer (pronounced liar, lol) I worked for, and never gotten out of games in time without problems. I could go on, but I wish you all the best wishes.

  89. For two hundred thousand years social networks were simultaneously economic networks. If that were true with today’s social media, then we wouldn’t be in such a horrible mess.

If you want to help, then I suggest you put your weight behind getting advertising distribution turned over to social media users via an open ad network. This would make companies more accountable and allow tons of people to start making money from the Internet. This would inject trust back into buying, increase consumer confidence, and rebuild the world’s economy from the ground up.

  97. Would really like to talk to you about sponsoring and hosting your wordpress blog… but I am sure you have many similar offers (and way more than we can afford) so what’s unique about my offer? The beer is stronger up here!

Good luck and I am serious about the offer, at least the hosting and the beer.

  99. Not a surprise. You’re arrogant and don’t listen to your users. Mixing Twitter, Friend Feed, Scobleizer and FastCompany would never work. Your blog is your selling point and you sold it separately from FastCompany. Numerous comments on your video over blogging errors but you didn’t listen. The reason we came was your blog and it all but disappeared in the last year.
