When I started doing Twitter searches for the word “plane” there were about two tweets every 10 seconds coming in. Within minutes that went up to 200 to 400 Tweets every few seconds.
There were tons of first-person accounts too.
The pilots are heroes. They landed the plane in water safely and got everyone off, according to current reports. That’s just amazing. The water temperature is in the low 40s. That’s not survivable, but as you can see from Janis’ photo everyone got into life rafts.

The people bitching about the “real-time web” are missing the point I think.
I first came across this story on Facebook. Then I saw it again, scanning the blog feeds I follow. If I was really interested (I am not) I would have checked Google News or even Google search. I have not watched TV news at all in the last month and have only read the local daily 4 times in the last 5 weeks. The point: In the past we relied on Big Media to filter and inform us of what was happening in our community and the world…but not any more…Big Media is dying. That IS the point I think.

After a couple months, I could no longer tolerate loud commercials and constant interruptions. If I wanted to see something, I’d wait until it came out on dvd. Now I’ll stream it online.
The point of this: now we choose. If someone mentions something that I find interesting and want to know more about, I look it up. I don’t get spoonfed anymore.

So I’m just not going to get little chopped up, regurgitated pieces of “news” dropped into my mouth if I don’t want them/don’t feel I can trust them.

1. Most news does not get covered by the “pros.” For instance, how much of what your local city council is doing gets reported? I can tell you here: not much.
2. News distribution channels are radically changing. When I was a kid we had three channels and a newspaper. Now? We have the web. To me it’s interesting to watch what these might be used for.
3. It lets me triangulate in on the truth a lot faster. If this were on TV I wouldn’t have been warned about it in real time. I might not have known until late tonight. You say that doesn’t matter. I think it does. The speed at which news gets to us all is very important. Maybe not for this story or the one yesterday, but someday it WILL be important. For instance, what if a chemically-toxic cloud were moving toward your house. Or a tornado. Wouldn’t you want to know now rather than in 45 minutes?
4. Even pro news is being impacted by this. The guy who shot this photo with his iPhone and put it on Twitter was on MSNBC within 20 minutes. That is a HUGE change in how the news is gathered and reported.

Finally, in the old world of newspapers or talk radio or TV I didn’t get to participate. I couldn’t tell people what was happening to ME. Talk radio used to tap into that human need, but it can only get 20 callers on an hour. This let thousands of people tell you what they thought. I find this fascinating.

We are in a lean economy, and even the news organizations realize that to stay on top they need to rely on “Citizen’s” who are there to assist them report the news in real time. Getting the sought after exclusive.
We are in the communication age, and while it is distracting, and often times we seem to trip over ourselves to be first it is a necessary evolution towards unfiltered news (however close one can get).

Robert, while I personally don’t currently have cellphone service, I can certainly appreciate why other people do have them. Having a landline will give you yet another way to connect. Which network will stay up in any given disaster is difficult to predict. One thing you won’t have to worry about with the landline and corded phone is cellphone batteries dying. If the power goes out for a couple of weeks, will you be able to recharge and operate your cellphone?

The people bitching about the “real-time web” are missing the point I think.
I first came across this story on Facebook. Then I saw it again, scanning the blog feeds I follow. If I was really interested (I am not) I would have checked Google News or even Google search. I have not watched TV news at all in the last month and have only read the local daily 4 times in the last 5 weeks. The point: In the past we relied on Big Media to filter and inform us of what was happening in our community and the world…but not any more…Big Media is dying. That IS the point I think.

I haven’t owned a tv for about 5 years now. At first it sucked (it wasn’t a pretentious choice. I’m effin broke), but then I got internet instead. After a couple months, I could no longer tolerate loud commercials and constant interruptions. If I wanted to see something, I’d wait until it came out on dvd. Now I’ll stream it online.
The point of this: now we choose. If someone mentions something that I find interesting and want to know more about, I look it up. I don’t get spoonfed anymore.
I no longer watch little news clips of press conferences. For instance, gdub’s last two speeches were WAY different in their entirety than on the handpicked selections I heard on the radio. So I’m just not going to get little chopped up, regurgitated pieces of “news” dropped into my mouth if I don’t want them/don’t feel I can trust them.
Now there are choices.
