Plane crash in NYC captured on real-time web

Twitter and friendfeed, about 50 minutes ago, erupted with info about a plane crash in NYC.

One of the first photos (as reported on Silicon Alley Insider) was made by Janis Krums on his iPhone and posted to Twitter. He was on one of the first ferries to get to the scene, just minutes after the crash.

When I started doing Twitter searches for the word “plane” there were about two tweets every 10 seconds coming in. Within minutes that went up to 200 to 400 Tweets every few seconds.

There were tons of first-person accounts too.

The pilots are heroes. They landed the plane in water safely and got everyone off, according to current reports. That’s just amazing. The water temperature is in the low 40s. That’s not survivable, but as you can see from Janis’ photo everyone got into life rafts.

WOW @jkrums posted the first photo of Hudson plane crash from an iPhone. Amazing photo! http://ad.vu/2hrc — he was in first rescue group.

  1. I think this is just another example of how social media sites like Twitter are replacing mainstream media as the most dependable source of breaking news. Where else can you find out about something seconds after it happens?

  7. I’m noticing Twitter.com (and the search API by extension) is very slow. Considering Election Day was far noisier and much less lag, how can one incident like this crash Twitpic or slow Twitter? Or isolated incidents and/or more users now than then?

  9. I agree with David… This plane down thing is the reason why i just replied “STOP” to an SMS from CNN. News addiction can be a problem and things like tweets and feeds are more distracting then the television.

  11. David: in several ways.

    1. Most news does not get covered by the “pros.” For instance, how much of what your local city council is doing gets reported? I can tell you here: not much.
    2. News distribution channels are radically changing. When I was a kid we had three channels and a newspaper. Now? We have the web. To me it’s interesting to watch what these might be used for.
    3. It lets me triangulate in on the truth a lot faster. If this were on TV I wouldn’t have been warned about it in real time. I might not have known until late tonight. You say that doesn’t matter. I think it does. The speed at which news gets to us all is very important. Maybe not for this story or the one yesterday, but someday it WILL be important. For instance, what if a chemically-toxic cloud were moving toward your house. Or a tornado. Wouldn’t you want to know now rather than in 45 minutes?
    4. Even pro news is being impacted by this. The guy who shot this photo with his iPhone and put it on Twitter was on MSNBC within 20 minutes. That is a HUGE change in how the news is gathered and reported.

  13. Plus, note all the tweets about what the pros were reporting. This way I didn’t need to watch four channels. I got all the news brought to me and people told me where to find the best news. This is also a HUGE change in how we consume news.

  15. Finally, in the old world of newspapers or talk radio or TV I didn’t get to participate. I couldn’t tell people what was happening to ME. Talk radio used to tap into that human need, but it can only get 20 callers on an hour. This let thousands of people tell you what they thought. I find this fascinating.

  19. It may not be important to some, however, even the Press are monitoring Twitter. Just a couple of weeks ago with all the flooding that we received in the Seattle / Portland area the Seattle PI reported that they were getting all their updates and feeds directly from Facebook and Twitter.

We are in a lean economy, and even the news organizations realize that to stay on top they need to rely on “Citizen’s” who are there to assist them report the news in real time. Getting the sought after exclusive.

We are in the communication age, and while it is distracting, and often times we seem to trip over ourselves to be first it is a necessary evolution towards unfiltered news (however close one can get).

  21. Robert, what if a toxic cloud is moving toward your house while you are asleep? Will your computers wake you up?

A weather radio can wake you up if a tornado is coming; you don’t need twitter or ff for that.

  23. Three problems:

    (1) Where’s the objectivity?

Robert, you know only too well about how easy it is for rumors (about your wife?) to propogate. It’s tough enough when it’s blogs… now you want REAL-TIME needs to ask everyone to take a breath?

    (2) What is the motivation behind the majority of the tweets?

Is it concern over survivors? Is it to report news? Or is it merely the desire to say “Iwas here, I was one of the first, and GOOD FOR ME?

    (3) “Finally, in the old world of newspapers or talk radio or TV I didn’t get to participate. I couldn’t tell people what was happening to ME.”

First off Robert, read my second point. Now ask yourself – why should ANYBODY care about YOU when a plane a continent away crashed with everyone onboard a survivor?

There’s no other way to take this comment – taken in context I believe – as anything else but narcissistic. Really? Did you have some relatives or close friends in the air going anywhere in North America when that plane went down? Should I feel releived because I now know how YOU feel?

Bottom line? I know the point you’re trying to make Robert – and no, this instance… at least in the way you put it – convinces me. Period.

  25. DaveD: rumors are a problem, yes. But they are a problem in the mainstream press too. But, rumors do get cleaned up here pretty quickly. If someone started spreading one about me I would be able to deal with it adeptly and quickly.

What is the motivation? I don’t know. I follow smart people like Dave Winer and Tim O’Reilly who want to make me smarter.

As to the motivation to tell people the news, well, I’m a journalist and I like telling people about the news. If I were on that ferry I would have made a picture and sent it all to you too. And I would have helped rescue people if I could.

Why should anyone care about me? No one should. But I have distribution now and I’m a connector. I’m very adept at seeing patterns in the real time stream and putting them into something useful. That’s what an editor does.

Again, if there’s a toxic chemical cloud headed to your house and I see the evidence of that happening in real time and I warn you, will you be happy? That will happen someday on the real-time-web.

uh… what is your motivation in this question? Is it jealousy?

when people experience crazy things that don’t normally happen, there is a desire to share that abnormal experience with others. on top of that, this is a major media story. how many days in my life have I personally witnessed a major nationwide news story unfolding before my eyes? once. one day. it’s not an everyday occurrence and there is naturally a desire to share. not because it’s “all about me” but because it’s a rare and unique day that a person doesn’t forget and they generally feel a desire to share that. there are always a few that want publicity, I’m sure, but I don’t think it’s as many as you would suggest by your comment.

when people experience crazy things that don’t normally happen, there is a desire to share that abnormal experience with others. on top of that, this is a major media story. how many days in my life have I personally witnessed a major nationwide news story unfolding before my eyes? once. one day. it’s not an everyday occurrence and there is naturally a desire to share. not because it’s “all about me” but because it’s a rare and unique day that a person doesn’t forget and they generally feel a desire to share that. there are always a few that want publicity, I’m sure, but I don’t think it’s as many as you would suggest by your comment.

  56. Robert, while I personally don’t currently have cellphone service, I can certainly appreciate why other people do have them. Having a landline will give you yet another way to connect. Which network will stay up in any given disaster is difficult to predict. One thing you won’t have to worry about with the landline and corded phone is cellphone batteries dying. If the power goes out for a couple of weeks, will you be able to recharge and operate your cellphone?

CNN needs to start checking twitter. Sure they need to filter it for the truth but a photo of people getting out should have answered their question.

  89. How would any non-emergency person know a “chemical gas cloud” was moving towards your house before the emergency personnel did? Unless it was the person responsible. Anyone that did know would likely be dead before he could tweet it.

As for the tornado scenario, you’ve obviously never lived in Tornado Alley. People are well warned of a potential tornado well before it even forms. See, there’s this thing called the EBS. And also weather radio. By the time someone not actively monitoring the weather and understanding what was happening well before the tornado formed, would “tweet” it, it would likely be too late to do anything but pray. Nice try, though.

Twitter is perfect for narcissists. Relying on it to warn you of an emergency? No thanks. By then it’s likely too late.

It’s not as much of a revolution in news gathering as it might seem: news organisations have used stringers for years. Twitter essentially enables anyone to be a stringer, but without a formalised compensation structure. The main risk for the organisation is reliability; the main risk for the individual is not getting paid. It still requires mainstream media to “validate” the news, whatever it might be.

There’s nothing particularly remarkable about regular people using commonly-available hardware and software to mention what’s happening around them. Something being reported online, in near (not actual) real-time is certainly impressive the first few times you see it happen, but the novelty quickly fades – STOP using the term ‘real-time-web’ because it sounds like a lame buzzword that can be applied to almost anything that happens on the web! You could say an edit on any web site is done in ‘real-time’…and reporting events at the scene of the news is just as the same thing.

First annoying buzzword of 2009: For every time ‘real-time-web’ is mentioned, a cute, fluffy lolcat will probably perish somewhere – save the kitehs!! 😉

I first came across this story on Facebook. Then I saw it again, scanning the blog feeds I follow. If I was really interested (I am not) I would have checked Google News or even Google search. I have not watched TV news at all in the last month and have only read the local daily 4 times in the last 5 weeks. The point: In the past we relied on Big Media to filter and inform us of what was happening in our community and the world…but not any more…Big Media is dying. That IS the point I think.

From the “tweets” you posted it appears that most people are relaying what they are seeing from watching what the ACTUAL NEWS OUTLETS are reporting. If it’s not that, it’s people repeating what other twits are saying. I challenge you to show me, in all this twitter blather, where you got any piece of news that wasn’t also being reported by professionals who know what the hell they are doing.

I haven’t owned a tv for about 5 years now. At first it sucked (it wasn’t a pretentious choice. I’m effin broke), but then I got internet instead. After a couple months, I could no longer tolerate loud commercials and constant interruptions. If I wanted to see something, I’d wait until it came out on dvd. Now I’ll stream it online.

The point of this: now we choose. If someone mentions something that I find interesting and want to know more about, I look it up. I don’t get spoonfed anymore.

I no longer watch little news clips of press conferences. For instance, gdub’s last two speeches were WAY different in their entirety than on the handpicked selections I heard on the radio. So I’m just not going to get little chopped up, regurgitated pieces of “news” dropped into my mouth if I don’t want them/don’t feel I can trust them.

    Now there are choices.

Surf the unedited, unreliable, rumour and gossip filled internet. Or read the same AP stories found in other mediums. There little “new” about Twitter. Just an electronic version of stringers.
