My First FlipCamHD video

I was at the Monster party at CES hanging out with the executives there (they sponsored a talk I did with Wine Library TV’s Gary Vaynerchuk about how bloggers can survive and thrive in this crappy economy). A guy handed me a little bag. Inside was a business card and a Flip MinoHD. Turned around and it was Jonathan Kaplan, CEO of puredigital which makes the FlipCams.

I don’t accept gifts of more than $100 so will give this away as soon as I get one of my own but I did use the device to shoot some video of Diana Ross and I put it up on Facebook, which now supports HD video (I did a video with Chris Putnam who runs the Facebook video team where he explains what they did). The quality you see online (if you sign in) is pretty damn close to what I see on my screen here.

More HD videos ahead, especially as I go to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland at the end of the month.

UPDATE: my friend Chris Pirillo did a review of all three and likes the Creative Vado better.

  1. A Google search of ‘FlipCamHD’ returns that reference this post and not an actual product. According to the puredigital site, the official product name is the Flip MinoHD. While I agree that this is splitting hairs, I’m sure Jonathan Kaplan would prefer mention of the *actual* product name, given his generous gift and all…

All that said, I’m interested to see more low-light, indoor videos.

  3. That is some sweet swag! I recently compared the Flip Mino HD to the super-cheap Memorex HD cam from RadioShack. I shared quite a few comparison videos and stills. The Flip is great in low-light indoors.

My main issue with the Flip Mino HD was the narrow lens. You always feel that you can’t fit everything into the frame, or that you have to be way far from the action. Holding the camera out in front of you to film yourself is not really possible.

  7. You’re gonna give it away?! I want it! Now I imagine that you were thinking of giving it to someone else. Possibly someone you know even! But hey, why not give away your freebies through your blog? After all, they get given to you because you’re a blogger, with the intention of getting some blog limelight. And we your loyal readers are the intended target of aforementioned blogging! So why not take it one step further? You could run little competitions, simple ones. Like what would someone do with the device if you sent it their way? I’d have a crack, and I’d happily pay the postage too!

  10. I love my Flip HD, and my only complaint is that it’s hard to keep it stable without a tripod. The new iMovie (which includes video stabilization software) is going to be huge for videos like these

  13. Good quality video. Audio isn’t that great on the Flip.
The closest I ever got to Diana Ross is when I delivered croissants to her chalet in Verbier, Switzerland. At that time, the door was always open and I’d leave them on the kitchen table.

  17. I have tried 3 brands of HD palmcorders including FlipMinoHD and prefer the Kodak Zi6.

Zi6 has higher quality video at 60fps, has real HD out with component cables, larger screen, and still photo capability. Mino does have the advantage on size and charges from USB.

Also, watch out if you expect to play the HD videos on a standard netbook. I blog about that here: http://budurl.com/HDcam
