  22. I currently use a Time Capsule to backup my Macbook (so backups are done automatically without having to plug in any cables). However I am desperately looking into online backup solutions to solve the fire/robbery issue.

    I am really close to choosing Mozy or Backblaze. $5 a month for unlimited space? That seems very reasonable. Not sure it is feasible to backup my media library this way (it would probably take weeks for the first backup to complete over my Internet connection), but for photos and documents it should be very reasonable.

  41. Chris G: I’ve been running Mozy for a while. It still has some rough edges – at one point, it lost the ability to exclude files, so every backup run attempted to upload my 30Gb Parallels HD image, and more worryingly the one big restore I ran “failed” – apparently omitting three of the hundred or so files I had requested, but with no indication which files or why!

    That said, I have also had negative experiences with a USB drive on an Airport Extreme (fatal disk corruption of the sparsebundle which holds the Time Machine image).

    Carbonite is apparently working on a Mac port; their PC version certainly seems good, apart from an irritating conflict with the MSI (Windows Installer) system’s temporary files. I’ve been running that on my Vista machine for a while without issues.

Local backup offers advantages of speed of recovery and backups, whereas online backup offers access from anywhere and ultimate protection. We offer two online backup services, IDrive for the consumers and IBackup for SMBs and some verticals, and are working on a local backup offering.
