Qik supports Blackberry for live video

Funny, I couldn’t Qik this video. Why? It was embargoed until tonight. So, I used a Flip camera instead of my Nokia phone.

But Qik is moving fast to support the most handsets out there.

For the people who don’t know what Qik does it lets you broadcast live video from your cell phone.

Anyway, a whole team of Russians made this because it’s hard to get video access on a Blackberry. In the video you meet the team behind Qik.

Want to read up on the moves instead of watch a video? Here are some others who’ve written about this news:

TechCrunch.
VentureBeat.
NewTeeVee.
ArsTechnica.
ReadWriteWeb.
WebWare.

And, of course, you can talk more about Qik on FriendFeed.

  1. It is funny that Next2Friends were the first to live stream from a Blackberry and you didn’t cover it but you cover the under dog.

You must like being the under dog or is it because you are involved with Qik ?

  3. with the data rate tariffs being as high as they are now I doubt this will catch on soon(I mean in general as a technology, not the specific service). iPhone did some good work lowering the price per kb but it needs more work. I ‘ve seen various other platforms such as this fail in the past simply because it was to expensive to transfer everything through GPRS/3G…i hope i am wrong with this one.

  5. Blah! They clearly jumped the gun on this. People are having nothing but problems:

@Ngage: I think I agree with you, though I don’t really understand what you mean by “the underdog”. In my mind the underdog is Next2Friends, Qik is the darling of the Valley, they even get press when they DON’T have news (the recent TechCrunch iPhone article).

Anyhow, I’ve been streaming for a few weeks on my BlackBerry with Next2Friends no problem. If you want to broadcast live video from your BB I’d go with them.

  7. I’m downloading it now to my curve… I hope this works. I love how much easier these apps make it for me to keep in touch with friends and family thousands of miles away. It’s just so fun.

  9. @Ngage, @Mark Kodosky, @Crackberry Nut – I am sorry to hear you are having problems with Qik on your Blackberry devices. Please email us at blackberry@qik.com with the problems you are having and we’ll look into it right away.

Also, would like to point out that Qik on Blackberry is in Alpha. While we have a number of users using this successfully, there are some who are not. The point of this Alpha release is to understand the various issues that may happen under various circumstances and iterate on this to make it better as we march towards Beta.

  11. I’ve only used Qik a few times, and it’s quite the display of my quirkiness.. 🙂 http://qik.com/nickilaycoax

I plan to start using it more for community and business purposes because it’s so great to show what you are doing, when you are doing it to create a buzz.

I am not so impressed with the usability of their website though. I’m having the hardest time trying “follow” someone. I’d probably do more on the actual site if I was able to navigate the darn thing better..

  13. Rick,

Found you while surfing the YouTube Live (Rhett and Link) site, and stumbled across a piece of software you reviewed which sorts and highlights your email using AI algorhythms (I guess). I have lost the name of the company and really need the sw. Was this your ‘cast? If so, would you be kind enough to give me the link or the name of the company.

I used to be with ComputherLand and Wyse Technology Technical Support back in the early 1980s in Silicon Valley. . . and later was a systems analyst and programmer for the State of New Mexico, now I am absorbed by webcasting and I am really glad to have run into your site. You are REALLY good and I thank you.
