Exclusive video: SocialText brings enterprise Facebook and Twitter to wikis

Socialtext is making big news all over the Web this morning. Here’s a rundown, later in the post I’ll talk about why. I also have an exclusive video of Ross Mayfield, founder of Socialtext demonstrating the new features to me.

Ross Mayfield, for my cell phone camera last night, explains the changes in this 18-minute video.

Ross Mayfield, co-founder of Socialtext, writes on his blog “Hello Socialtext 3.0!”

BusinessWeek: Socialtext 3.0: Will Wikis Finally Find Their Place in Business?

Webware: Socialtext co-founder: Enterprise Twitter isn’t enough.

eWeek: Socialtext Signals Marks Wiki Provider’s Move into Enterprise Microblogging.

Dawn Foster notes the move of Enterprises to social.

Zoli Erdos says “Socialtext Becomes Really Social.”

ZDNet: “Socialtext enters Twitter for Enterprise sweepstakes.”

TechCrunch writes “SocialText 3.0 blends Facebook, Twitter, and the Enterprise.”

So, why are these changes important? Because they bring the social features that many people have gotten to know on Twitter and Facebook into the Enterprise along with advanced wiki functionality.

Is this bleeding edge stuff? Yes, for the enterprise it is. And Socialtext is already seeing some big “Fortune 50” pickup.

I can hear the critics now: “who needs another Twitter or Facebook at work?” But if you watch the video, you’ll see why these features make a new kind of collaboration possible.

It’s nice to see Socialtext succeed, they hosted the first Barcamp in their offices and now they are pushing ahead of the world again.

  1. How is this different from MS-Sharepoint?

New sharepoint supports blogs, wikis and MS already provides Twitter in Exchange type environment (albeit isn’t exactly same, but do we need it?!)

  2. I think Social Text is one of the few companies that may be able to make in-roads in the enterprise. Most enterprises (depending on the culture) are very wary of having their information on any external servers, which makes services like Yammer etc. a very tough sell. Social Text has already worked very hard bringing wiki’s to the enterprise, it makes them an absolute natural to build on that and add microblogging and other social networking services. i believe that social networking and microblogging in the enterprise could potentially really help with the knowledge management problems that almost every enterprise has right now.

  5. @Adi R – Sharepoint is a POS IMHO, not sure how much better it is now but in 2003 when I was using it everything about it was incongruous, it is another technology solution to a people problem.

  7. Good video interview. I liked two quotes a lot:

In order to take it into the Enterprise, it has to have a purpose.

Stand alone Twitter clones are very different than what we’re looking to acheive here. What we’re doing is an integrated user experience to enable people to collaborate and share knowledge inside the company.

  9. I hope it turns out to be something that can at least bump out one of the lesser-used apps I’m using now… it would be nice to consolidate but I’m betting everything I use will still remain must-haves, in addition to SocialText.

  11. This definitely looks pretty good.. I have spent the last 8 years working for companies that sell Enterprise collaboration systems, and the biggest hurdle I have faced when working with prospective customers (and even existing customers) is getting them to understand the uses of tools like this, and explaining that it’s not frivolous.. it’s the way they should be working, and likely the way that all of their prospective employees will demand that they work.
Every company (like Socialtext) that helps add to this feeling and gets the word out there about how much better business can be when using these tools is a huge plus in my book.

  13. This looks really interesting. It will be even more interesting to see if microblogging will make any impact in a workplace – it remains to be seen. Also, what impact with that be – it might not necessarily be positive.

  14. The amount of social media networks today is ridiculous. Somehow they keep taking the basic functions of the one before and adding a new feature. Never ceases to amaze me how interested one can be with these socializing sites. Can't say I am excited about a new one, but I am interested to see how the world perceives it.
