Damn you Canon. Check out this post from Don MacAskill, CEO of Smugmug. It has all my photographer friends slobbering over themselves over Canon’s new $2,800 DSLR. Me too. I want one of these in the worst way.
Problem is I can’t afford one. Neither can a lot of people. I blew my gadget budget a year ago when I bought last year’s model of the same camera. My credit cards can’t take this abuse. Not while banks are getting wiped out. My friends are losing their jobs. Etc.
This is one reason why I like covering web stuff. For the most part the cool new things, like Fotonauts, a cool new photo sharing site, on the Web are free. Or pretty low cost.
But damn, look at that video. Slobber. Slobber. Slobber. Oh, sorry.
I think this is what’s wrong with our country. We get lust for new toys, or things we can’t afford, and decide to put them on our credit cards and we all get into trouble. I’m not going to do that this time. Sorry, Canon. We’ll have to earn this the old fashioned way: save, save, save.

Very true robert. Even in India, people have started abusing credit cards because of which are running into huge debts. I think people should understand the concept of saving. Thanks for raising such an important issue.

WOW – thanks for posting this, just checked out the videos on Smugmug, boy does that look good. Makes me and my 20D feel very humble but since there is NO way I can afford anything at this end of the spectrum I dont feel toooooo envious! Good luck saving!

I have been watching the Photokina feed like it was the Sears toy catalog at Christmas time. Nikon announced a new prime 50mm lens to replace the one I bought 2 weeks ago!.!.!
I agree with you on the credit card point 100%. Plus if you have cash in hand, you might be able to talk the store clerk down to a better price :D.

We get sucked into the “oooh look shiny object” pretty easily. We do so with web services, gadgets and even the news. You can see this effect even in the mainstream America when we see something get a lot of news attention, get outraged, the outrage dies down and people forget.

You need to do more product reviews Scoble, that way you at least get to play with the latest and greatest for a month or two. Saves building up that credit card debt too!

If you’re buying on a whim or because it’s cool or just because you’ve fallen under the spell of gadget lust, it’s money down the drain. It’ll ever pay for itself. The waste is doubly so when you look at what kind of camera you can get sub-$1,000.

If you’re willing to sell off the old camera, that will reduce the strain on the wallet. However, considering that the camera was about two years old as of last year, buying used would’ve been the way to go.
Still, I agree that people should be less dependent on credit. Spending more money over time due to interest charges because you don’t have enough to cover the immediate costs (other than for very large purchases like a car or home) means that you will be able to afford fewer things over time.
