I interviewed Brian Dexheimer who works for Seagate. He’s worked there for 24 years.
He told me that when he started working for Seagate selling hard drives the devices were as big as a file cabinet, only held 300 megabytes, and cost $12,000.
The drives Seagate started selling this week are about the size of a paperback book, hold 500 gigabytes, and cost $200 retail.

@Joe He’s talking about the newest FreeAgent Go portable drives. Bus powered, and quite a bit smaller than a paperback. They’re just a bit bigger than an iPhone. And they’re pretty rad.

Cool. I think the evolution of tech is really really cool. It should be a class in high school- but I guess by the time the information got to the text books it would already be outdated. OH well.

@Lacy I think the textbooks in general might already be outdated… What better class would there be to buck the status quo and ditch textbooks entirely?

Robert, I love being a consumer of this industry. Being a manufacturer in it seems like it would be a whole lot harder. The need for immediate and incredibly significant cost reduction is so big and it is hard to believe that would come naturally just from the increasing volume of a popular product.

I remember seeing an IBM XT with a 10 MG hard drive and thinking, “Nobody needs that much storage.” Boy, did I get that one wrong.

How silly for the display to breathe when operating, Mac’s do this to show sleep mode.
And why is it impossible to find the number of ports, are they ashamed only one FW-port and hence not chainable?
