The hype is in overdrive that there’s a new iPhone coming on Monday. On the other hand, I’ve been hearing that Forbes/Financial Times/Barrons’ rumors of troubles in getting the new 3G iPhone design done and to production are correct and that there’s no way that it’ll be ready to ship this month. It’s very possible that my source is working on a phone that’s coming later this year and there’s another one coming from another team that my source (who, obviously, needs to remain anonymous because Apple employees and contractors aren’t allowed to speak with the press and/or bloggers) isn’t involved in (which, if true, demonstrates that Apple is probably working on several iPhones to be released by the end of this year).
I’m also hearing that the new processor (that’s not ready yet, my source says) they are working on is a four-core design ARM (my source says it’s an ARM 11) that Apple has designed — the first processor in the original iPhone was a three-core ARM (my source says it was an ARM 7, but Wikipedia says it’s an ARM 11) that was integrated into a chip designed by Samsung. I’m also hearing that the new iPhone (again, the one that my source said isn’t ready yet) will have a much better graphics processor, too, but he wasn’t sure of the technical details on that, so we’ll have to wait and see. What will the one released on Monday have (if an iPhone is getting released at all) is still unknown.
But, again, my sources aren’t that good and Apple really makes sure that any one employee has absolutely no idea what else is being worked on, so who knows what we’ll see on Monday? Over on TechMeme (still my favorite news site, although FriendFeed has taken over my obsessive “noise” reading — news is breaking on FriendFeed 15 minutes to 75 minutes faster than TechMeme, but you gotta wade through a lot more noise to find that news) iPhone is already dominating the page, and within minutes of the announcements that Steve Jobs will make on Monday.
Me? I’m not going to WWDC. I’m going to some fun stuff up in Seattle instead. Translation: there’s absolutely no reason for any journalist except for the A list to be at the press conference — it’s going to be the most overcovered event of the year). That said, I’ll be watching Engadget and TechCrunch like a hawk to see if I should run to an Apple store (they do the best early reporting on Apple’s live events). If Apple does indeed, ship something, I’ll buy one of the first ones and let you know what I think.

Data for cellphones in this country is so damn expensive most people rarely if ever use 3G features. For example, one of our telcos (Vodafone) sells a data plan for $19.95 a month with a whole 5Mb of data – and charges around $0.49c/kilobyte over that… That’s $4900 a Gigabyte !!!
Who the hell can afford that ?
Admittedly that’s at the extreme end of the spectrum, but my own telco (Telstra) is almost as bad, and there are NO CAPS on broadband usage – so those less careful can get some really REALLY nasty bills.

Jon: actually if they did delay a 3G iPhone, it’d really help me out because I wouldn’t have any competition for AT&T’s 3G network and it’d remain fast so I could do more live Qik videos. I really expect a 3G iPhone to greatly reduce the quality of that network. Luckily here in America we don’t have such nasty restrictions, otherwise my bill would really be huge (I have done about 100 hours of videos now on Qik with my cell phone at 300 kbps of 3G that’d add up quickly).

I think Apple would be better not to diminish the message that WWDC should be all about, and that’s a 3 prong strategy for the future direction of Mac OS X; iPhone, Macs, and the enterprise. The intro of the iPhone will dilute the overall message.

And, like I said, my source isn’t very good. Of course that hasn’t stopped other bloggers from printing photos that other bloggers say are fake. Jon: The UK was in a similar situation until a year or so ago, with telcos seeing data users as a small, vulnerable captive audience they could exploit to an unlimited extent; one guy I know racked up a three figure bill checking his e-mail over the weekend, I had an “unlimited” Vodafone plan (three figures per month, in USD) which had a low usage cap and appalling performance.
Now, however, they’ve changed completely: it’s finally occurred to them that a reasonably-priced data plan will actually sell to consumers in profitable volumes — and several of them introducing caps on the daily cost of pay-as-you-go plans for data as well. One telco, Three, is even bundling free Slingboxes and promoting video streaming to their handsets as part of the $20/month (10Gb/month) pack! I imagine Australia will go the same route quite soon.
Between the level of expectation built up and the way the existing iPhones have been cleared off the shelves now, there MUST be some form of new iPhone coming on Monday. For people like me who are not that technologically knowledgeable about the mobile space, a few words in regard to exactly what 3G is and why I’ve been hearing it is so important (what it means in the evolution, what new capabilities or features etc.) would be helpful. I believe that I read that there are more cell phones (or phones in general) in use in the world than PC’s . That is interesting.
In regard to Friendfeed breaking news earlier than TechMeme, that is interesting as well. I know with the China earthquake, Robert’s focus on Twitter being the newsbreaker. In general, is the news that is being broken (or arriving early) on Friendfeed arriving from Twitter (or some other outside source from Friendfeed), or is it being inputed directly into Friendfeed?

It has three separate ARM cores on board – they’re not part of the same CPU. Little screwups like this continue to demonstrate your technical incompetence.

I tend to also believe there’s a high-ish likelihood that Apple is working on one than more model for release this year, or certainly at least they’re working on more than one model at a time (regardless of release timeframes).

Umm, Snow Leopard 10.6 too, plus 3rd party iPhone applications, with 10.5.4 in 2 weeks or so. But I thought the touch-screen mini-tablet was going to hit, but it might all be 10.6, 3G and way way cheaper subbed iPhones.
The BIG RUMOR be if they are finally gonna bless OS X on PCs (10.6 being Intel only), so no need for Hackintoshing, the whole lack of action on the Psystar being worth a ponder. So 10.6 and OS X on PCs? That news is way bigger than simple iPhone refreshes.

With all eyes in the mobile world on Apple this week I thought I thought the time was right to talk about what we believe is the best way to conduct a mobile web search on a device like the iPhone…a device with a rich, full screen, touchscreen only. Namely: Voice search. You say it, our speech recognition (running on a server) produces text, the text automatically dumps into the search engine that’s the subscriber’s choice (Google, AOL, MSN, etc.), the search engine returns results. Or via voice, search for any content from your local iTunes playlists.
Using the Apple developer kit, we’ve been hard at work developing impressive technology that make the iPhones capabilities even more powerful. Voice search. Song search and selection. At the touch of a button and simply by saying the word. Over the next few days – as the excitement mounts for the WWDC – we’ll be sharing more and more details here on our blog. For now though, I think all of us should sit back, relax and enjoy the show.
Of course, we believe the most powerful use of speech would be running on the iPhone itself (vs a remote server) and made available to the developer community via iPhone’s SDK APIs.

I was an early adopter iPhone user myself (tho’ I’d heard the price drop rumors and waited until that happened), and although they’re not adding big bells and whistles to this second-gen model I do think that faster connections, more storage and a proper GPS is enough for some folks to upgrade. Truthfully, all I do with the thing is use it as an iPod when I travel or forget my nano at the gym, make phone calls, Yelp new restaurants when I’m on a business trip and standing outside one wondering if I should eat there, and find myself when lost (often). That being said, doing these things better or faster or with more storage isn’t enough of a reason for me personally to ditch a perfectly good phone – especially since it seems likely that the third-gen is already in progress.
Plus, I break things. A lot. (So, best to wait until I break this one and the third-gen is out.)
The addition of a video camera might have sent me to the upgrade camp… looking forward to that someday.

I can’t wait this is going to be great and it’s only 48hrs away! What other Phone in the world makes people wrap around building for hours. They skip school, call in sick for work. They should make every day that a new Iphone comes out a holiday. Everyone wants to complain about the #1 phone in world. I say. Screw the Haters. The Iphone kicks butt… Nothing in the world is perfect. But there’s so many Pro’s to the Iphone that it makes people come out in droves! Droves! Rock on Iphone!! Show some Iphone Luv…!!!

I have a weird need. I had a topic on the Apple forum regarding iPhone 3G stabilization issues, battery life and so on.
Over last 3 days it turned into some discussions directly between me and Apple site moderators. They deleted 4-5 posts which highlighted some direct facts and most importantly, one moderator’s comments that “You are of course right in that Apple botched this project entirely”
Now, Apple moderators made my access Read-only, so no freedom to speak.
I need some medium to publish the screen shots which I took before they were wiped off from the site … If you want to see them before helping to the people, I would be fine.
