Oh, I wish I could write that headline. I did interview AT&T’s CTO, John Donovan, on my Nokia cell phone today. We did talk about the 3G network that AT&T built. But he wouldn’t answer any questions about Apple. Of course that’s why he got to be CTO of one of the biggest phone companies in the world: he’s smart.
This was the first time he was interviewed on a cell phone, which I found somewhat interesting. He talked to me about the LTE network they are working on, which will be even faster than 3G.
Speaking of Qik, on TechCrunch they just announced that they are supporting Windows Mobile now too.

I wish that I had been able to ask a question of him. Why is the EDGE network so unreliable for me on my iPhone?
The speed, while not blazing, is fine for most needs. But the connection drops very frequently, and leaves me with Safari just showing me a spinning progress meter. Normally it says that I have many bars of reception too.

I live in Redmond (this is the Ben who visited in January with Kim).
I definitely get better EDGE performance in some places than others. I have less than 50% success in getting internet access when I want it (i.e. when I try to use it, more than half the time it times out and gives me no packets).
It might be my imagination, but it does work better outside of my home area.

Of course LTE is going to be faster than 3G. It’s supposed to be the next step. lol. Next step for GSM carriers is pretty much LTE. LTE competes with Wimax on this level for cellular. Spectrum is probably the normal reason why some carriers are moving toe LTE since it allows you to operate on a much smaller band and don’t have to purchase out. But that also means that you don’t operate at peak levels either.

Robert – I have the Nokia N 95 too…and find it is hard to recharge because the pin is so short and thin.
The portable little chargers don’t work regularly either.
Have you found that also, or is it just my phone?

Ben: When you experience that issue, do you power the iPhone off completely (by holding the Sleep/Wake button down for a few seconds and then sliding the red slider over) and then powering it back on? Sometimes just refreshing your network connection can help. Also make sure that you have WiFi disabled when you know that you’re going to be using EDGE. Otherwise, it keeps searching for WiFi, and if you get in range of one, but not close enough to get a solid connection, it will put the EDGE connection on hold and keep trying to pick up the WiFi. If this doesn’t help, and you notice that the severity of the problem varies from place to place, then you may want to note your location(s) at the time(s) when you experienced this and call AT&T customer service. (I know everyone hates calling customer service, but no company can fix what is never reported) If the problem is the same everywhere you go, you may need a new SIM card. Hope this information helps you out. 🙂
