Revision 3’s hot new studio

You’ve heard of Diggnation or the GigaOm show, right? Well, my friend Jim Louderback, CEO of Revision 3, the folks who do a range of Internet video shows, including Diggnation, invited me over for their 4 p.m. Friday video afternoon.

Revision 3's Friday afternoon staff meeting

On the screen? Gary Vaynerchuk’s daily wine video blog. They watch video (here’s my own really short video that gives you a sneak peak into the room) from around the Internet together as a team. Really smart to do. Jim gets lots of interesting ideas from his team this way and they can see their reactions — as a group — to new stuff. Then they showed off some pilots of things they are working on which were pretty cool too, to gauge whether or not they were ready to share with you all.

On the table? A $9 bottle of wine that Gary was talking about on screen. It was damn good and that guy Gary is damn crazy. Fun video blog to watch.

Jim Louderback, CEO of Revision 3, shows me around the studio

Anyway, after the videos were done Jim gave me a tour of the studio. He noted that cameras are much cheaper now (Jim was one of the guys who started ZDTV, which became TechTV, which is where Kevin Rose, founder of Digg, got his popularity), less than $10,000 when they used to cost $100,000. He also noted that the tripods the cameras sat on haven’t changed much in price.

They have several sets, one for each show, and a workshop where they can build new stuff for the sets. A separate control room looks in. He showed me how much lower cost that each of those are now that they are powered by a Mac Pro, which, while still expensive, are an order of magnitude less expensive than the computers that older studios are built with.

Fun to see inside one of the new media businesses that’s doing interesting stuff.

What do you think about Revision 3’s shows?

  1. I love most of Revision 3’s stuff. Diggnation, Totally Rad Show and Tekzilla are among my favorite podcasts. It’s interesting that the best podcasts are coming from Leo’s TWiT network and Revision3 – all of whom of course were the big names on TechTV.

  3. I am a big fan of many of the Revision3 shows. I have followed many of the current hosts at Revision3 around the net, until they finally reached their destination 😉

They are a real new media network that is really reaching the masses with a thought through concept.

    Cheers

  5. Diggnation is good. Alex and Kevin clearly benefit from the years they spent on tv. Their repore is excellent.

I quit watching Systm though after the eleventy-millionth technical error they made when talking about electrical stuff – it makes an electrical engineer cringe.

  7. Tech Video: really. Well, then, you might not have known that he wanted me to work for him back in the mid 1990s. He’s been a friend a lot longer than you’ve been reading me.

  9. I love most of the Revision3 stuff, especially GigaOm, Diggnation and Tekzilla. Jim is a great personality too, like him since the TechTV days.

You seem to know everyone, I guess it pays to live in SF.

  11. So you say it’s being powered by a Mac pro? What are they using for a switcher? Are they using some sort of a Trinity, Ross or Ignite system for production? Also, is it an HD or SD set-up?

(Sorry for all the TV talk)

  13. I like what Kevin and Alex are doing as well as the rest of the revision 3 staff, I reminds somewhat of the old tech TV days with Leo and Patrick.

I hope that someday we’ll get a show like the the screen savers back on the air or better yet the web.

  15. Snooze. They need to expand and go more mainstream, and hire a few writers. Just more nazel-gazing tech-faddy shows, with even less audiences.

All this new media, Curry’s Podshow, CURRENT, Podtech, Fast Company TV, are all headed for the same place, deathwatch lists.

  17. I have the WORST name to spell. Everyone wants to put an “a” or an “h” into it. It’s funny, because you just do it the way it sounds.. LOUD (which I am), ER, and then BACK.

As for Robert, I still think one of the biggest mistakes I made at TechTV (and I made a lot of them) was not hiring him back when it was ZDTV in the late nineties. Now, of course, he’s untouchable .

On the tech side, we’re still working the kinks out of the studio. For Chris Coulter, what do you recommend, show-wise, that we do? What do you watch? I agree on the writing, that’s something we’re trying to address.

    Thanks Robert! Stop by anytime.

  21. I love all the Revision3 show, but my favorites are all the ones with Martin Sargent; he’s super hilarious. The last episode of Infected was great; they were in a dive bar with a live audience and Martin threatened to blow himself up if they cancelled Infected, then Jim gave him the bandwidth to do Internet Superstar from a shed.
You should be on since you are an Internet Superstar.

  23. Well, I generally go all scripted or mini-series, but in the half-unscripted runs, mainly Discovery, Travel and History: John Ratzenberger’s Made in America, Future Weapons, Cities of the Underworld, History’s Lost & Found, Dirty Jobs, Myth…

If recreating TV on the net, instead of a mass focus on insider-baseball tech stuff, expand and stop the redundancy, lots of categories outside the geeky-game-player-gadget-comic-head market.

Podtech went boring corporate droll, Podshow going whatever they can mix into the “playlist”, CURRENT going whatever gets submitted, all the liberal-feel-good-fake-documentaries. Fast Company TV will become whatever grabs Scoble’s fleeting attention span with Start-Up and Tech Conference TV.

Rev3 seems a TechTV reject, overlapping tech shows, with pointless daily newsy banter. It’s like bad talk radio, long, without any focus, talking to themselves in their own self-branded snark.

I’d suggest, semi-scripted mini-digests, and you could theme around TECH, just not computer and game tech.

I would like to see a live show, which I believe you are working on. I would think that Mahalo Daily would be a good show to put on the network and I believe Jason has been shopping around for networks. Bring back the cooking show (Ctrl Alt Chicken) or do a new one. Perhaps have guest chiefs showing them how to cook.

Keep up the good work @Rev3 @Scobleizer and anyone elses putting content on the web!!
