Joiku turns Nokia N95 into Wifi hotspot

Oh, this is cool. I read about it on the Marikaya blog. The software is Joikuspot and turns a Nokia phone into a Wifi hotspot.

This is the kind of thing I learn about when I come to Europe. Yuri van Geest told me about it — he’s sitting in the front row of LIFT.

  1. Some data plans offer unlimited downloads – but not if you were to use your phone as a modem.

    Would a data plan provider be able to discern that you were using this connection on your laptop?

  3. I don’t believe an operator can do anything about it(if they designed the app smartly) 😉

    I know they have some kind of packetsoniffers but those are more to see what kind of service is used(streaming, VOIP).

  5. I tried this on a couple of devices, but I could only get it to create a point-to-point ad-hoc WiFi connection, which is then similar to a Bluetooth connection (only Joiku seemed slower than Bluetooth, and Joiku doesn’t support e-mail, presence, etc.).

    Is it really creating a WiFi router / hot spot? Am I doing something wrong?

    I saw the same thing. It was too beautiful to be completely true I guess.. Made an update on the blogpost. Let’s hope that theire soon will be a Joikuspot PRO soon..

    JoikuSpot indeed uses ad hoc to create a hotspot. Reason behind this is the Symbian stack that is missing the critical bit showing AP mode.

    However you can connect several devices to JoikuSpot at the same time. I have had five (5) different devices in my N95 at the same time: Three laptops, iPod iTouch and one other N95.

    We are preparing currently the final version and it will also include NAT + security. As coding Symbian is not so straight forward, the final release will still take some time. We also have to optimize the code to allow battery life to bit longer than few minutes….

    It’s cool to see that people like even the beta this much. The final version will probably change the way people use mobile internet. Hey, that’s we are aiming to. 😉

  17. Cynthia: maybe. If you use the data features on your phone, you might incur data charges. For instance, I’m on AT&T’s data plan. I am paying flat rate. So I won’t pay extra UNLESS I use it outside of the United States where I’ll pay very high roaming charges.
