VentureBeat is reporting a rumor that Plaxo is about to get acquired by Facebook.
Ironic given that it was Plaxo’s script that got me kicked off of Facebook.
UPDATE: TechCrunch says the rumors are false, so far. I’ve contacted my friends at Plaxo and they won’t comment on rumors.
There needs to be a competition board that approves deals like this.

Would this be Facebook’s first acquisition since Parakey last year?
If it’s true, Facebook may do well to let Plaxo keep it’s branding since as far as I know, people still generally scoff at the idea of using Facebook for business.

The companies may well have been chatting about time the forbidden script came crawling, which might’ve led to some interesting discussions among the deal teams.

I think I heard that some of the Facebook engineers were impressed by Plaxo’s script π

I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but I am leaning towards Phil Parlock’s explanation. It seems unreasonable from a traffic and user crossover standpoint for Facebook to buy out Plaxo. Could this be a way to get control of Address Book 2.0 quickly and stop future pretenders to the Plaxo throne?

Deals like that don’t move so quickly. Ironic, yes….but also a coincidence for sure.

Plaxo has been sending a lot of spam since last one month. Almost everyday I get at least 10 emails saying that so and so stranger added me as a business connection on Plaxo.
Is facebook getting into ‘spam everyone for $$$” business? How else will they justify their $15B valuation π

That’s not spam, technically. You can sign onto Plaxo and turn that notification email off. Technically we call those kinds of emails “Bacn”, not spam.

I highly doubt this is the case.
Facebook is too small to have two brands and develop them separately. And buying Plaxo just to destroy them in the end would be pretty dumb.
I still expect them to use the hundreds of millions of new cash to acquire smaller social networking-start-ups in Europe, in the below-10-million-range.
