Google kicking butt on iPhone

My old boss, Vic Gundotra, has been showing off a new iPhone app from Google and also trotting out some numbers we first heard at the iPhone Dev Camp: that people with iPhones are using the Web at a far faster rate than people with other phones.

This data matches what I’ve seen in my own life, too. I have a $750 Nokia N95. It really sucks to surf the Web on, compared to the iPhone. So, why do I carry both an iPhone and the Nokia? The Nokia does video capture and has a much better camera than the iPhone, which doesn’t do video yet. Interesting data, though.

  1. I surf quite a bit on my N95, the thing that holds me back is that it’s very hard to find an unlimited data rate in Ireland.

I haven’t found the n95 browser to be particularly bad, but I like the way I can try things like opera as well on an open platform.

  3. Why not drop the N95 and get a compact camera? Keeping the N95 for the reasons above is like using a PSP for an music player.

  5. Robert, you find the iPhone camera inadequate? I’m a Mac-homer – full disclosure – but I’ve been really pleased by the quality. I don’t know all the techno mumbo jumbo, but I use it in my real estate business quite a bit and feel it’s much better than the old Treos I used to carry.

Other than video, what sets the N95 apart in your mind?

  7. I don’t use my phone to surf the web at all but have taken to using my iPod Touch (I guess I would use iPhone if I had one!) and finding that brilliant. The Blackberry Pearl just doesn’t surf how I want it. Functional but boring…

Is there an Apple Store in Ireland? If so, play around with an iPhone for a few minutes. This isn’t a “sales pitch”; it’s a zero cost way see what the “hype” is all about, even if you choose to never BUY an iPhone.

  11. @Tom: Apple seem to have overlooked Ireland for the moment for the iPhone. I have had a chance to play with one in the USA, but only very briefly.

  13. So you carry a $750 N95 phone instead of a camera? Why not just buy a nice camera and get much better pictures and video?

  15. They’ve gotta be headed in the Gears direction with the iPhone. Vic wouldn’t drop a hint like that near the end of the article without having just teed up a softball destined for the outfield fence.

  17. If you are going to carry the N95 just for video and pics, why not just ditch the Nokia and carry a digital camera that will take even better images?

  21. Guys, guys… get back to the story!

Over the Christmas holidays, Google got more hits from iPhones (2% of total smartphones) than Symbian phones (60+%).

I am no Apple fanboy, but that’s a remarkable explosion in use of the mobile internet and could have widespread implications, not least for Nokia.
For how long will Google invest in developing for three operating systems?

Seemingly on another planet, UK pre-Christmas iPhone sales were terrible.
