We’ll be streaming video from his house at about 4 p.m. today. Join us.

UPDATE: we had a TON of problems getting live video done at his house. Turns out he’s in a cell phone dead zone. Neither Sprint nor AT&T works inside his house. Amazing that in Silicon Valley’s richest neighborhood there’s still such dead zones. Anyway, his DSL line wasn’t working either. Funny, cause he was around at the invention of the Internet and it still doesn’t work for him.

The problems continued when we got home. We can’t figure out how to record the video we’re playing in Mogulus. We’ll figure that out tomorrow, or we’ll just put it up on YouTube or something. Luckily the Mogulus team will be on the bus with us on Saturday so we’ll get help from them with our technical issues.

The interview was amazing, as usual. I could talk with Engelbart for hours. He is simply the most amazing inventor/visionary I’ve interviewed in my journey.

  1. Here it is 2008 and I don’t see what you promised in terms of giving away your content to have “magical” things happen in ’08. I do see that you’ve updated your copyright notice to the current year though.

    Not that I want anything you produced because frankly your flickr photo stream is an example of someone with too much equipment and not enough talent. I’m more interested in seeing you putting your content where you mouth was in the Lane Hartwell fiasco.

    Mogulus is still referring to the Englebart interview as future but the time on your blog and at Mogulus is 4pm PST which has already past by a couple hours.

  13. I have an idle question about the Facebook dilemma, but what was a more blunt definition of what was going on? By your description, you were attaining peoples’ emails automatically, in which appealing for such a script seems groundbreaking for spammers.

  15. Sorry about not getting it up. We couldn’t get an Internet connection from his house. We had three cell phones, and he lives in a total cell phone dead zone, and his DSL line wasn’t working. Sigh.

  17. Mogulus cant deliver on demand clips …yet.

    NewTeeVee also encountered this problem and had to work with Max and his team to pull the sessions in chucks from the stream .

    Max said they where working on a solution but it must be harder than it sounds .

  21. It’s cool and ironic that this happens with one of the people who defined the PC experience decades ago. It’s a reminder that we’ve come so far, yet have so much further to go.

    Good luck. Can’t wait to see the video.

  23. I read his wiki you link. Very interesting reading and I did not know of him. I found this most interesting

    Engelbart slipped into relative obscurity after 1976 due to various misfortunes and misunderstandings. Several of Engelbart’s best researchers became alienated from him and left his organization for Xerox PARC, in part due to frustration, and in part due to differing views of the future of computing. Engelbart saw the future in timeshare (client/server) computing, which younger programmers rejected in favor of the personal computer. The conflict was both technical and social: Engelbart came from a time in which only timeshare computing was achievable, and also believed in joint effort; the younger programmers came from an era where centralized power was highly suspect, and personal computing was just barely on the horizon.

    Basically he foresaw the dawn of web 2.0 and it turns out he was right and they were wrong over the long haul to a large degree perhaps. When one uses client/server, and the controller of the server doesn’t like how you are using it (say running a script on facebook) then they were right to be suspect of centralization even though it will continue to happen as we move forward to allow collaboration and socialization.
