So, I was standing in the middle of the lobby — I have a badge, but didn’t use it cause the hallway was so awesome. I met Douglas Engelbart, inventor of the Mouse, among many other cool things. I asked him if he’d seen anything cool. Said “no.” Then I turned on the camera and he wouldn’t answer me. Heh.
Anyway, a group of MySpace executives met me in the hallway and said they don’t limit people to 5,000 friends.
I didn’t get their names, but anyway, we talked about the new MySpace platform that’s coming soon.
They told me that their platform will show you a lot more information about each application before you install it. Unlike Facebook.
Anyway, great place to network. How often do you see Dave Winer and Doug Engelbart together?
Here’s a video I shot of SmugMug CEO, Don MacAskill, who has a shirt that shows whether there are wifi signals in the area or not. It rocks.
Here’s the lobby shot when I first got there. We also interviewed the NewsGator guys (really great feed service for enterprises — the longer video will be up in a couple of weeks).

You already met Doug a while ago. I guess it’s a slow news day.
Everybody keeps talking about this “web 2.0” thing but very few seem to really understand what it is, least of all the talking eggheads at these Web 2.0 summits. No wonder Doug was bored.
It’s not javascript or ajax. It’s not hidden divs that appear when you click a link on the page. It’s not streaming audio or video, flash or silverlight or whatever that Microsoft monstrosity duplicating anothe product in a proprietary manner is called. The amount of time people spend talking about the “technology” behind such trivial things is ridiculous. Web 2.0 was around way before AJAX was possible.
Web 2.0 is the leverage of existing content to create your own space to display ads! It’s syndication. A search engine is classic web 2.0 because it leverages content built by other people to create their own representation of that content. Extra web 2.0 if it’s not hand-made syndication but a completely automated process like Google’s pagerank or digg!
A search for “Microsoft antitrust” on Google or Live.com reveals a ton of information… virtually none of which was ever produced or paid for by Google or Microsoft. That’s web 2.0. Techmeme, technorati, wordpress, torrent sites like thepiratebay.org… all web 2.0. Web 2.0 means “everybody else does most of the work.”
The self-created content model is becoming unsustainable. Didn’t podtech realize this a while ago?
Who knows what web 3.0 will bring?
