Tomorrow at the Web 2.0 Summit, Microsoft will announce partnerships with a couple of Web 2.0 companies, I’ve learned (sorry, I can’t share more details until after the Ballmer keynote). On first look these partnerships might not seem to be a very big deal, but I think they are potentially significant. Particularly if Microsoft starts making other moves into the Web 2.0 space (which I think we’re starting to see).
I’ve been impressed by the work being done on Live.com properties lately. If you’ve been watching my link blog you’ve seen me put several things on there in the past two weeks. Things like Live Spaces, and other stuff that Dare Obasanjo has blogged about here.
If this is a trend it’ll bring a lot of goodness to the Web 2.0 startup industry. Microsoft has a world-class sales organization. Still is used by nearly everyone outside of our tech bubble and has HUGE economic power to totally change the game.
Translation: I’m cheering Microsoft on.

There’s a downside to Microsoft getting in. It’s like WalMart coming into town. Yes, you get great products at cheap prices, but the mom and pop stores go out of business and when you ask the clerks about a tool or a book, they couldn’t care less.
I don’t like to see passionate entrepreneurs squeezed out by the likes of Microsoft. Or Google. Or Yahoo. Or any of them.

Perhaps that’s the sign that a new technology has “jumped the shark”…Microsoft buys in.
@3 Passionate entrepreneurs will find new technologies to promote and new niches to carve out. When the behemoths start buying is when innovation stops and commercialization starts. That’s our current model for economic development.

Scoble I agree with you on this one… I think Microsoft is starting to show some fire in the Web/Live side. There are various pieces that are doing well. Their updated maps application is awesome. It’s as good as Google Maps, which says a lot since Google Maps is also very good. Their search is getting better with each update. In latest update is very quick, although the relevancy is still not as good as Google but its getting there. They are on the right track just need a little better integration.

@7: The messenger API is coming next month. They were demoing parts of it at ReMIX Boston. There’s a cool little trick that let’s you start a chat from a website without requiring a Messenger account.

Robert, did you also see that the Today show is using thousands of Twitter feeds to watch for breaking news? It’s on Valleywag but they have the story wrong. Obviously the MS in MSNBC is rubbing off on NBC.
