I’ve been hearing about the Chandler project for years. It’s one of the things that Mitch Kapor funded through the Open Source Applications Foundation. Some people thought it might be an Outlook killer. My friend Ted Leung worked on it and I’ve always wanted to check it out.

A few days ago I got my chance when I was invited over to meet Mimi Yin, project designer, and Katie Capps Parlante, general manager to get a look. They explained to me that Chandler is aimed at small groups who want to work together in a way that email doesn’t afford.

This interview and demo combo is pretty long, but we need that length to get into some depth about this project.

What do you think?

UPDATE: Ted Leung, who works on the project, added a lot more detail onto his blog and reponded to some things he saw on the interview.

  1. What do I think? I think I don’t have 51 minutes right now to watch the whole thing. Fortunately you link to the OSAF Chandler site. Unfortunately the answers to some integration questions I have didn’t exactly float up into the Magic 8 Ball window. Fortunately I can come back to your lengthy and somewhat ad hoc interview with Ms. Yin to see if it provides clues.

    I think your long ad hoc pieces would benefit from the kind of structure that includes four or five minutes of executive summary followed by the down and dirty details. That would probably require some editing.

    I was unsure of Chandler’s capabilities/goals until seeing the video. I agree with ‘fp’, that posting a “I have A-D-D” version of this video would increase viewership.

    Also, and I almost hate to ask this in a public forum, why didn’t you ask about OSAF’s connection to The Church of Scientology?

    Have you seen Lunarr yet, Robert? That’s another collaborative tool that I’m interested in exploring. They’re here in Portland. If you come up to visit them or anybody else, let me know. I’m making progress on my own venture and would love to be able to talk to you face to face again. I still owe you lunch.

    Are you saying there IS a connection aside from the issues EFF has been forced to deal with? What should have been questioned?

  18. I love Chandler, and I’ve been using if for the last week and it’s great. So when this video came up via my RSS reader, I jumped at the chance to read it.

    However, first time round I got a completely unrelated video about Seagate’s hard-drives… no problem, Google Reader can be a little flakey about embedded videos. So I hopped over to the page to watch it. Now, okay, it’s tiny – but at some point in the first ten minutes I tried to jump forward a bit and the video started again. Then I clicked a link and had to restart the video again, but it’s that $£*!ing Seagate video again!

    I’m going to give it one last try now, but I’m going to look around for a downloadable version first. And if it doesn’t work this time, or something kicks me back to the start of the video a-freakin-gain, I’m not going to be impressed, Scoble.

  23. Thanks Mr. Scoble! There seems to be some sort of download option in the embedded video that got me stuck in a opening-new-popup-windows loop. Is it supposed open the link to the http://www.scobleshow.com page for the specific media?
