I’m already getting sick of all the talk that the Jaiku acquisition by Google means the death of Twitter. Of course where is this talk happening? Twitter! Heh.

Tim O’Reilly put it right: Jaiku’s strength wasn’t as a competitor to Twitter at all. It was the mobile presence and aggregation features that I liked over on Jaiku. Jaiku has a mobile client, in particular, that’s really great.

The more troubling thing is that Google acquires companies and then we never hear about these companies again. Will that happen to Jaiku? I hope not.

As Jonathan Davies says, Jaiku’s other strength is in aggregating RSS feeds into one place. Interesting that Google is building a very strong position in the RSS ecosystem with Google Reader and Feedburner and now Jaiku. Interesting, will Google use its RSS position against Facebook? We’ll see come November 5.

Imagine if Google made a more open social networking tool than Facebook all via RSS feeds? Stick that into your RSS feed reader and smoke it!

Anyway, I’ve had a Jaiku account for a while and like it. Hope to see what they do next.

  1. I agree sort of, yes Jaiku has the aggregation features (aka social streams), but a major part of it is the twitter like functionality of giving status updates.

    In it’s current form I do see it as a competitor to twitter, but it will be interesting to see what they do around the corner what with Google on board.

    But no, Jaiku will never really be able to ‘defeat’ twitter.

  8. But then Jaiku/Google should get Twitter to work right on top of it. With today’s buzz and all the activity and new adds going on at Jaiku, I’ve had to keep switching between services–not to mention my “real work” just to stay on top of everything and communicate with friends. I wish Jaiku built was some Twitterific-like application that could let me use everything and interact with all feeds at once. That’s the direction GOOG needs to move it in, somekind of Seth-homebase.

  11. Twitter is a stream of text, or at best a stream of consiousness.

    Jaiku is a stream of context and a stream of presence.

    That’s why the latter is a glimpse of the future of a (mobile) web.

  12. What about Pownce? Jaiku with Google makes me want to peacefully leave Pownce. Love the file sharing at Pownce: photos, videos, links, events but Jaiku has as well. LOVE the little photo is a post element. Jaiku is stronger in Asia and Europe and while I don’t think it will *kill* Twitter, it might *force* Twitter to do some things better.

  13. I don’t believe the Facebook killer tech Google will roll out Nov 5. It will most likely be very interesting and helpful to all social networks, maybe even Facebook, but from what I’ve seen of Orkut so far, they’ve got nothing on Facebook yet.

    Google is looking a little more like Microsoft every day; bigger, slower, more confused. Even in the online app space, Zoho is outdoing Google in several ways.

They’ve got video, RSS, blogs, and now a Twitter-esque service. Imagine combining all your content and attaching it to a person. Imagine being able to search all the content from a specific person across platforms.

    I’m not particularly thrilled with Jaiku, but it may lead the way to putting all your content under one roof. One searchable presence.

  33. Correct Infinity Pro, it’s all about critical mass and right now Twitter has it. As technology people we need to learn out lesson, more features doesn’t mean better. Apple creates products that people love, but they don’t generally have as many raw features as Microsoft products. People don’t want all the features, they want something that works really well. I could teach my mom to use Twitter, I’m not so sure about Jaiku.

  39. I also prefer Jaiku to Twitter, primarily for its mobile application and RSS feed aggregation. As for Twitter having all the people – it depends where you live. A lot of Europeans are on Jaiku, whereas Twitter has a bigger user base in the US. At least that’s the sense I get. Am I right?

  41. I don’t see Jaiku causing major issues with Twitter. Google’s best play here is to use it to integrate GrandCentral, Reader, and Gmail better via mobile. Maybe even YouTube, but for the basics, I still use Twitter, and I’m not dropping it, but I am a Jaikuholic due to the ease of seeing replies and getting into conversations quicker.

  45. Google was late in Social Networking. They recently released Google Shared Stuff (a del.icio.us-like) and now bring Jaiku in the wagon. Great move. They should now begin to play on Myspace/Facebook playground.

    The most interesting thing you’ve said so far.

    Imagine linking this with a “believability – expert – I trust this person – reputation” score (like eBay feedback) and OpenID and you have a cool distributed eBay type of social network, where spam just sort of disappears. And interesting people rise to the top.

    I hate the fact that my eBay reputation is great, but I modded ‘troll’ in slashdot. Don’t they know I’m reputable?! 😉

    But it’d work on all sorts of platforms (could we hook in facebook RSS + myspace RSS into it as well?)…

  63. You are right, Google buys everything and dumps it pretty much. But at the same time it’s gaining traction in terms of new accounts – transferred from dodgeball etc to google. So, it’s culling any competition, while taking adavantage. But, I certainly hope it’s not going to kill Jaiku.

  68. I don’t think the concept of microblogging itself can die, either with twitter or jaiku. Both are now positioned to take advantages in different domains. Jaiku is slated to become the mobile twitter from the gPhone in its due course, and Twitter still rules the roost in text simplicity, and the social need to shout-out is going to remain forever.

    I am an avid microblogger, and have an account on twitter, as well as an Indian site chittR, which also scores in simplicity and UI. Bet its an alpha, but works pretty well in cross platform.

    I would wait for Jaiku to figure in the gPhone and also looking forward for Google’s answer to facebook in November
