I’m still learning to use my new Canon 5D — these aren’t very sharp if you blow them up — but, damn, I’m having fun shooting people. More on Barak in a second.

Funny you should mention this. Right now I’m watching “Kitchen Nightmares”… Gordon Ramsey is a passionate guy, but it is tempered with the anchor of knowledge. In contrast, the owner of this restaurant is “passionate” but really he’s just a hothead– he knows nothing of the business or craft.
As a person who speaks in a very animated way, and as a person who is VERY passionate about what we do, I love that you captured that essence in this series of photos. Barak indeed has “the fire” (as we say of the kindergartners).
Funny you should mention this. Right now I’m watching “Kitchen Nightmares”… Gordon Ramsey is a passionate guy, but it is tempered with the anchor of knowledge. In contrast, the owner of this restaurant is “passionate” but really he’s just a hothead– he knows nothing of the business or craft.
As a person who speaks in a very animated way, and as a person who is VERY passionate about what we do, I love that you captured that essence in this series of photos. Barak indeed has “the fire” (as we say of the kindergartners).
what a nice surprise to see this here. i do want to send a monster-massive shoutout to BigFix marketing chief David Appelbaum… he’s the brave one… and he actually had the idea to run the character we created for president… and to BigFix CEO Dave Robbins for bringing us into BigFix in the first place to create this character (very brave)… oh.. and.. to walt morton and greg wrangler who deserve as much credit for Ray Hopewood as anybody… adios and thanks again robert.

Great photos by the way! One pointer on portraits, no matter how shallow or deep your depth of field is, if you focus on the person’s eyes, you will almost always get a good shot. The EXIF data in Flickr shows the shots to have a focal length of a 100mm however? If it really is a 105mm f/2.8 macro then I presume it’s a Sigma lens? If its the 100mm then it’s presumably the Canon EF 100mm Macro?
How do you find using the macro lens for portrait photography? I’m contemplating between the Canon EF 100 f/2.8 macro and the EF 100 f/2.0 telephoto lens and would be using it largely to take pictures of my kids.

I can only dream about the 135 f/2.0L. My budget will only accommodate either the 100mm macro or telephoto. Plus my camera has an APS-C sensor and not a full frame so 135mm would be a little too long for general use with a 1.6x crop factor (the Canon 5D body is another of my dream subjects :-)).

Hans: it’s the 105mm f2.8 macro. I was shooting at too low an ISO for the conditions.
Jeff: the photowalk on 10/1 is going to be awesome. I have some news that I’ll post about that today too.

Sorry, it is a 100mm — my old Nikon system had a 105, so got confused. It’s awesome.
Thomas Hawk has one of those and also has a 135 F2.0. He swears by that lens, says it’s his favorite.
The 100 is a great portrait lens, though, and the macro capabilities are useful elsewhere.
