Heheh, I love these two posts.
Blindsquirrel.org (wants me to stop writing about Facebook): “I’m still a Scoble fan, but I’m hoping the subject changes once he takes on his most important role – the father of a new baby.”
Shel Israel (who is just discovering Facebook on his new iPhone): “I have never had a more productive business tool than Facebook is turning out to be. Never.”
That brings me to Techquilashots. He repeats something a lot of people have said without really understanding what I’m doing with Facebook: “But the problem Robert (and others with tons of friends — even if it’s 100) is that you don’t really care about the actions of all those people — and in FB apps, you really want to see the actions of certain top friends of yours.”
Totally untrue. I regularly just click around on my friends social graph. Not just the “big name” ones that I recognize. But especially the ones I don’t recognize. I want to know what connection we have and I want to discover new people before someone else does.
That’s the magic of Facebook and the fun of it.
Many people don’t understand what I’m doing with Facebook or the other social tools.
That’s OK, I hope they stay in the dark. Makes it more fun that way if people think I’m just looking at Kara Swisher’s profile.

agreed. it is a great tool. with the apps it is doing a lot of linkedIn style things. i think with the apps it is a matter of time until FB takes the top spot in the social network world. although Myspace has a massive head start. nice post

i wish i could have different views of the main events home page.
for example id make the default all my family and closest friends – and id make a different page of all the tech people i know. *like the ones that post 4 videos in a row and bump everyones family events off the page 😉

I look at Facebook as a marketing tool, and as such it is a great community manager. You have a great community of followers and it only makes sense that you would love it.
As to it being a panacea for everyone, more TBD. I don’t think it’s a silver bullet.

*just to be clear – if Facebook had the above “tabs” i would look forward to you posting as much as you like… its just FB is sort of a personal tool right now… they need categories – then the personal stuff doesnt get bumped when robert gets on a roll 🙂

one more (sorry for the separate posts – wish i could EDIT :p)
last point refers to groups… maybe they would be more relevant if we could make them a news tab as well. So all of a sudden the dormant _groupname_ shows all its members activities

Maybe I’m just showing how much of a Facebook n00b I am, but I just don’t see the point in adding ‘friends’ that aren’t actually friends.
I guess some of the links that are in common could help people get to know each other but that can be done in other ways.
Maybe I’m just weird, but I’d like to see a tiered friend system…”friends’ are actually people that I know personally, and something like ‘acquaintances’ for people that I’m getting to know, or have had contact online with over a mutual interest, etc.

Scobes :), the main concern I have for those people with large “friend” lists in applications is the default filtering that they need to take to keep up with all of them: Time.
If you pre-filter the people you add (to some degree), then you can potentially worry less about who and find what’s important. By following so many people who don’t have the time to filter by importance, and so you filter by the time you have available.
It depends on your goal, but what I’d suggest is that if you’re looking to be a connector, then you need to have a better filter than just your time. Otherwise important things are more likely to slip through the cracks.

I’m saying what Richard is saying — we only have so much time. Maybe you do see what your 5,000 friends are doing — but that’s a lot of data/time. Don’t you always want to ensure you don’t miss what your wife, family members, Arrington, Winer, and a few others, are doing on FB, and THEN see what others are doing? [I don’t know who you prefer — but I think everyone has those elite few that they really want to see what’s up — even if just close friends and family]

I definitely wasn’t knocking Robert and have always felt I was a pretty quick learner. It was more about hearing about it so much. The guy’s definitely passionate about it! I understand. It’s exciting. He’s excited.
I’m hoping the lightbulb does go off for me at some point, but I’m not so sure I have the proper time to give to FB like I probably need to. The key to me seems to be all of the applications, as it seems FB is a framework – a platform.
Now where did I leave that blinder removal kit? ;p
