I am having breakfast with some incredible people. We’re in Alvy Ray Smith’s house. He’s the co-founder of Pixar. But today I just had a conversation with Elliot Soloway, professor of computer science at the University of Michigan.
One of his more famous students? Larry Page, co founder of Google.
We have a discussion about how education is changing. I put the whole conversation up on my Kyte.tv channel. It’s in two parts, so you’ll have to watch the second one first.

Pass my kudos to Alvy Ray! Pixar has done an amazing string of movies. My whole family just loves them.

Robert — Thanks for the comment on my blog today and letting me know you had a sit-down with Elliot. Great conversation, esp. revolving around cell phones in school in the coming years.
As for the whack with the “clue stick”, still laughing about your comment. Think you’re safe now! BTW, I added a new post pointing people back to this video and adding a bit of commentary of key parts of your talk with Elliot. Check it out when time allows:

Hoping that you’ll add a few key edu-bloggers to the Kyte.tv roll call soon, or at least to your blog. Lots of good folks to introduce you to that can continue putting flesh on the bone of what Elliot is talking about here.
Again, thanks for the comment. Great 2-parter with Elliot. Cheers, Christian

Professor Soloway has not changed one bit. He was my prof for software engineering in the Winter term of 2001. It was a joy to attend his lectures. Great interview!

I wonder if Elliot Soloway has any other famous students… and I’d love to interview Larry Page to find out if the personal factor was stronger than situational factor in his life… what would happen if he didn’t go to the University of Michigan? 🙂
