New word processor for iPhones

Kevin Warnock, founder and CEO of SilverOffice, just dropped by and showed me a really cool app for the iPhone: a word processor. Named gOffice.

Now, why is that cool? Because he showed me a letter that he produced only on the iPhone. I have a video of Kevin showing me the word processor over on my Kyte channel. The video is a little rough, but that’s OK.

Oh, you can try it out on your regular computer too and get a close simulation of what it looks like on the iPhone.

    Oh yeah – and talk about a name trying to cash in on the big names.

    Robert, turn off your iPhone for a week. Ignore the whines your son will make during that week too.

    Get some perspective. This is advice from an Apple fan and an AAPL stock holder.

    Consider it. Please.

  9. I thought it works well, but they need to work on their file sizes. I typed “testing this new word processor” and it turned into a 500 KB file in my inbox.

  11. A textbox? I opened the “demo” on my computer and all it shows is a textbox? That’s now called a word processor? I wonder how long they worked on that! If only I had come up with this idea.

  13. Um, the word processor I saw was just a text box, without formatting. That isn’t really a word processor… More like… a Piece Of Crap!!!

  15. ioannusdeverani: did you watch the video? It might look like a text box, but it does a little more than that.

    It’s early and developers don’t have a real UI to play with. Plus, this stuff needs to work on a small screen. Lots of limitations. What, did you expect Microsoft Word to be on there? Heheh!

  17. DaveD: you might just want to go read Digg for a week. Oh, I forgot there’s a ton of iPhone stuff there too. Sorry, you’ll just have to deal for a few more days. Eventually something else will come out that’ll be interesting to talk about. Or, maybe I’ll notice there’s a ton of new Facebook apps to talk about. Want a ninja?

  23. The app looks very early in the process. I’d like to see it in a couple of weeks when it’s a little more mature and developed. Right now I don’t think it’d use it.

    Wow, add cut/copy/paste and it’s almost as complete as notepad on Windows 1.03 from 1985 – not WordPad – just Notepad.

    Let’s be reasonable. This is at best – and even that’s stretching it – a text editor. To call it a word processor is flat out misuse of the term. Just because it’s on the “Jesus Phone” doesn’t mean lowering standards and redefining English that much. I mean, let’s be reasonable, the “Leave a comment” editor on this blog has more functionality than that “word processor”.

  27. Who writes “letters”? At the airport the other day, I noticed that old people spend their laptop time in Word, doing who knows what. Younger people spend it online.

    Word processing is a tedious activity no matter how you present it. I expect it to wane over the next few years as people have much less need to write “letters”.

    Actually No. Currently in the technnology section, Digg has just 2 artciles about iPhone. Same in Techmeme (one of them is yours)

    It’s just that the lack of a real SDK is keeping better apps from being developed. This one took him three weeks to build and he already had pieces of it pre-built.

  41. It’s nice to see gOffice making the comeback on iPhone, and I wish them success with the first *text editor* for iPhone.  Kevin is a nice guy, I gave him my special award for the most honest statement at the Office 2.0 conference.

    He is incorrect about listing the “Big Three” online office companies as public: Zoho (and their parent company, Adventnet) is privately held. Btw, they released the iZoho for iPhone on iDay 🙂

  47. I think gOffice is a waste of time. The notes App. on the iPhone is just as useful. At least on the notes button, you don’t need to connect to the internet.
