iPhone mania continues in SF

iPhone mania at SF Apple store

Patrick and I dropped in on the San Francisco Apple store tonight before our walk with Dave Winer. Photos on my Flickr feed of that.

The San Francisco store was sold out of iPhones.

Every few seconds another person would enter the store and ask “when are you getting more?”

The display with cases was mobbed. Could hardly get close to it. Someone ripped off an iPhone from the display right before we got there, too.

iPhone mania continues, at least at the San Francisco store.

Oh, I just checked the iPhone availability page and Apple is sold out tonight at EVERY SINGLE STORE in California. Amazing.

  1. Simple products with good design seem to resonate with the masses nowadays. The MHz or horsepower numbers are irrelevant.

See iPhone, Nintendo Wii, the new Fiat 500.

One point: mobile phones usually go through hell. They are dropped to the floor, squeezed, scratched, get ran over… iPhone is a piece of art, you don’t want to handle it that way. In other words, it’s perhaps too fancy for everyday mobile phone use.

  3. I’m amazed by this too, hell its not even a 3g app!

Still, I guess that anything that combines multiple objects into one neat snazzy little box is always gonna be a winner.

  7. The Apple stores are getting product daily for the most part. I checked last night and all the stores in VA were suppose to be sold out today but I called and they had them. So now I have an 8GB iPhone.

  9. Jimbo: really? Apple sells more than a million iPhones in less than a week was expected? I don’t think anyone expected that. In fact the market didn’t, which is why Apple’s stock price went up this week. http://finance.google.com/finance?q=AAPL

If everyone expected them to sell what they did the market would have stayed flat after they went on sale because that expectation would have been priced into the stock price.

That’s not official. These numbers are analyst’s estimates or purported leaks from ATT. (Depending on which analyst you beleive the numbers range from 500K to 1M)

  13. We wrote about how this is a grown up launch – yea, the hype & hysteria of people lining up is great but then if you don’t actually deliver units into people’s hands – you’ve wasted all that free PR and worse, you’ve annoyed your customers AND left money on the table …

And we also mention, Apple has a page up listing inventory for the next day – think about that – not only are their inventory controls so good, they WANT you to have stock in hand to buy, they would rather you not waste a trip down if all you want is an iphone – how is that for bravery and customer service?

  17. I wonder how the durability tests went for the iPhone. Battery life tests? I’m guessing both did poorly. I have this sinking feeling that the iPhone is going to be the product that makes everyone lose faith in Mac. Class action lawsuits? It seems too delicate and precarious.

  19. Andyfox: you must have missed the durability tests that PCWorld did on the iPhone. It passed with flying colors.

Battery life? I get more battery life out of an iPhone than I do out of my Nokia N95 and there will be external batteries out soon. They also have a way to get your internal battery replaced if it starts dying.

I think you’re out of touch with how well this product will do and is doing.

  21. Have you tried firmware 2.1? It improved battery life a lot. It was terrible before 2.1 but somehow it’s much better now.
