Going on an iPhoto walk

It’s stunningly beautiful here in Half Moon Bay, so Patrick and I are going for a photo walk. Why? To compare the cameras in the iPhone with the Nokia N95. We’ll shoot each subject twice, once with each camera.

It will be fun to take Thomas Hawk out on a similar walk, but he’s having lots of trouble getting his iPhone activated. He’s live streaming all his troubles with AT&T.

  1. Well it didn’t surprise me to see such a huge quality difference between the iPhone and n95 pics. What i’d be interested in, though, is how you’d compare the user experience of taking a photo on the iPhone as compared to the n95?

  5. I agree. Nokia takes it – hands down. Nokia seems to be both bigger and brighter. Much more pleasant to look at when compared side by side with the iPhone photos. Sorry Patrick.

  7. Yeah, that comparison goes radically in favor of the Nokia, with nicer color balance, more vibrant pictures. It’s a shame, but if I were buying one of these two for the pictures, I’d definitely get the N95.

    Nokia FTW! The lighting looks much more natural; closer to a standard camera. The iPhone seems to have too much shadow.

  11. Oh how things have changed: It used to be that a son and father would play catch or go hunting together. But now, walking around taking pictures. Not saying its a bad thing. just look at how technology changes even the most fundamental things.

  15. I think the photo of Patrick near the fence/shore (#01072007239 from the N95) shows the N95 is superior. The iPhone’s focus is soft, the white balance is off or the colors are odd (Patrick is far too red) and there is too much contrast.

    It also appears that the N95 has more dynamic range: the sky is pretty blown out the iPhone, and much less so on the N95, but Patrick is still acceptably visible in both (hence, I don’t think it’s just an exposure problem). In short, the iPhone photo look like it was taken with a camera phone; the N95 looks like it was taken with a decent point-and-shoot.

    I’ll keep looking through, but so far the N95 is the clear winner in my book.

  19. The iPhone is superior to the N95 in experience, though. Taking pictures on it is a lot more fun, more consistent, less likely to crash, uses less battery life, etc etc.

    If only the hardware were better in the iPhone…

    That said, putting a 5mega pixel camera that autofocuses, has a flash, etc, like the Nokia would have increased the price, increased the troubles it would have had (moving parts increase customer support issues) and would have made the phone not as reliable.

    So, I can totally understand the tradeoffs Apple’s engineers made here. Truth be told I’d rather have an iPhone than a Nokia N95.

  25. Yes, that’s certainly a factor. When I bought my last cell phone, I bought one that had a good camera (at the time — Nokia 6265i), rather than a better phone in other regards.

    Most people wouldn’t have made the same decision, and now that I have a camera phone, I’m realizing that I don’t often use it for the photos-as-art side of things. I’m not sure if I’d go for the N95 over the iPhone either, despite the fact that it’s clearly a better camera-phone. I do wish the iPhone had better results, though.

  26. Yes, that’s certainly a factor. When I bought my last cell phone, I bought one that had a good camera (at the time — Nokia 6265i), rather than a better phone in other regards.

    Most people wouldn’t have made the same decision, and now that I have a camera phone, I’m realizing that I don’t often use it for the photos-as-art side of things. I’m not sure if I’d go for the N95 over the iPhone either, despite the fact that it’s clearly a better camera-phone. I do wish the iPhone had better results, though.

  31. Wow. That might become a breaking point for me… I’m not exaclty used to something as intense as the N95 in a cameraphone, but a Sony-Ericcson W810i has had me spoiled with its beautiful quality and color, along with a great flash.
