Cranky geeks is up — where are you going to buy your iPhone?

Yeah, the Cranky Geeks episode is up from today. John Dvorak is a hoot. Congrats to him for getting hired as a VP at PodShow, too. Anyway, of course we talked about the iPhone. What else is there to talk about?

Speaking of iPhone, I find I need to escape the Bay Area to try to get away from iPhone hype. This weekend I’ll be down in Cabo speaking to a bunch of PR professionals (Monday is the opening of Apple’s developer conference and almost everyone else who’s in the press is going to try to get a look at the iPhone).

At the end of the month I’ll be speaking at the Utah Blogger Conference. But, really, you’ll find me in line at the Salt Lake City Apple store.

Where are you going to buy your iPhone?

  1. The next phone I buy will be a Windows based phone. There are alot of nice features with the phone, that I wish some of the other phone companies would add some of the nice features.

  5. No where. I’m going to wait for all the hype to blow over and see if the iPhone is really all it’s supposed to be. In the end, I will probably never spend $500 on a phone. Not even for a phone/iPod, especially when it won’t even pick up my work e-mail (which is really the only reason to buy a smartphone). Even the touch screen isn’t all that novel now. There are at least 6 phones that I’ve seen released with touch screen interfaces, and they’re only getting better. No iPhone for me!

As much as the hype is screaming in the bay area, throughout the rest of the country, interest is low.

  9. The feature set looks good and the phone is extremely hot and so is its price. I will see if it cools down a bit.

But man, $600 for a cell phone!, I wish I got some discount or something.

  11. Man what a contrast from Microsoft Smartphone, everyone recoiled in total horror, and even now the only selling phones are the PDA Windows Mobile monsters. And Palm is dead man walking.

iPhone is sexy, slick and cool, but I actually like to type, and keeping my (fakey smartphone) keyboarded V. Might be seriously tempted if iPhone wasn’t married to only one provider and wasn’t so 3rd party app limiting.

Still I think the market will take awhile to develop…assuming it ever gets beyond trendy niche, which I doubt.

On the buzz and sheer sexiness, Apple gets an A+, on getting mass markets or even 10% of the market. D-. Shame, as I’d like to see an Apple with real power. Avid gonna hafta buy them out, imho.

  13. Suppose I’ll have to wait until it gets itself across the Atlantic sometime next year.

Irritating actually, as I’m getting a new phone next week. So unless there’s some crazy announcement that it’s headed to the UK v. soon I’ll be getting a Nokia N95 to tide me over.

At least the wrinkles will be ironed out of the iPhone by the time us Euros get our mitts on it đŸ™‚

  17. Robert, can I have your N95 after you get the iPhone and before you regret buying it? đŸ˜‰ That’s my next phone. The iPhone for me is too much of an unknown with too many negative things. You can’t change the battery, don’t know if it’s going to be sold unlocked and at what price, it is not even clear you can insert anothe SIM Card! Crummy 2 Mega pixel camera, my N80 has a 3 Megapixel one and Wi-Fi. Yes, I know the interface will be cool, but a phone is not like an iPod. We depend on it much more. It has to work well.

  19. “Where are you going to buy your iPhone?” – maybe WHY are you going to buy your iPhone is a more appropriate question!

There’s a reason everyone is talking about the N95 – wifi, gps, 5MP camera…is Apple missing something here?

If Apple’s name alone was good enough to carry sales, why did they have to have Bootcamp on Macbook’s and Dual Core Processors? Technological advances clearly matter.

It’ll be interesting to see the graveyard of iPhones once people realise that a) they can’t get on with the OS X operating system and b) there are other phones out there with vastly better operating systems and capabilities.

My iPhone is already on order…

  21. I am amused at those of you who think the interface doesn’t matter. If I’m going to use the thing as much as I currently use my much-beloved Treo 650 (going on two years old now; I won’t be out of my contract until November), I darn well better enjoy using it.

But that’s just my philosophy. Doesn’t make yours wrong. (WRONG!)

I’m tremendously loyal to a cellphone that can survive immersion in toilets, 15 meter falls, and being hit by rabid policemen’s nightsicks (I know several 1100s that have survived those situations). I don’t need my cellphone to compensate for anything – that’s what desktop PCs are for.

  25. No where. I have my misgivings about a few things:
    1) Crapular, enough said.
    2) No replaceable battery. So you’ll probably have to send your phone away for a few days while they replace the battery on this thing. What are you supposed to use for a phone in the meantime?
    3) EDGE, enough said.
    4) High premium price.
    5) Still no reviews about stuff that is important, such as call quality, real talk time, signal strength, you know, the important phone stuff. I’m sure Mossberg and Pogue won’t even test this part out.

However, if you don’t want that N95, I’ll gladly take it off your hands. I’ll even pay for the shipping. Sounds like a good deal to me. Think it over.

  27. No hurry to get another phone. Mine allows me to send/receive e-mail (incl. photos and movies) for no additional charge to my $30/mo plan. I’m just trying to hold down the cost curve for the rest of you.

I don’t think Apple will last very long in the phone business, but will be happy to be proven wrong.

Cranky Geeks is a great show. I wish there were more like it. The gravitas of the panelists makes a big difference, so some of the shows are better than others. Why hasn’t anyone been able to resurrect the Gillmor Gang? With a fairly stable group of LONG TIME industry watchers I think it was a best of breed in its category. I hadn’t been so bummed out since CNet left XM (causing me to cancel subscriptions to both).

  29. Nope, not buying and not even slightly interested. All I want/need is something for phone calls, you know, a PHONE. I’m looking for a phone that doesn’t have a camera or texting or anything except call capabilities. Less can be so much more…

You’re shooting yourself in the foot a bit hear, as Apple will be upgrading on the fly for the next 2 years, for free. The whole Gen1, Gen2 thing is misplaced, methinks.

Same goes for the AppleTV… constant free system upgrades and features added for 2 years

Even though most of the above posters indicate they are not getting an iPhone (and there seems to be a backlash at having it shoved down our throats as the best thing since sliced bread), Apple fanboys will buy this thing in droves. And Apple will make plenty of money servicing that market, even if they never expand much past the Apple fanboy market.

Come on people. If you are in the technology business for a living you need to have one of these for your own education.

I believe this device is a game changer. Web apps delivered to where you are. This is the future coming right at you.

When high end PCs cost $9,000 (yes, I AM that old) would you have owned one?
