I can’t get into Flickr anymore…

My Flickr account has locked me out. I can sign into Yahoo. But when I want to get into Flickr, it keeps asking me to associate my Flickr account with my Yahoo user name. I have already done that. It worked this morning, but now something is horked.

Sigh. No Flickr. No Zooomr.

I guess I’ll have to sign up for something else.

By the way, Yahoo has the WORST CAPTCHAs in the industry (the little codes that you have to read and enter in so you can change passwords and such). They are nearly impossible to read.

I need to do a video on how much I hate Yahoo’s ID system. It makes me want to use Passport and that’s saying something.

Sigh, Google, when are you going to give me a good photo sharing service so I can get the pictures off of my very cool Nokia phone and share them with the world? I guess I gotta sign up for Nokia’s LifeBlog service.

Grrrrr. Sometimes all this Web stuff frustrates me to no end.

Oh, and there’s never a link so that you can talk to a real human being. I emailed Heather Champ, Flickr’s community leader, but I doubt I’ll hear back until Monday.

Heheh, I can see my Flickr account. I just can’t publish to it.

Oh, and tried changing the password, and all that. I still can get into my Yahoo account. It just doesn’t recognize the Flickr side of the house anymore.

Is this happening to anyone else?

UPDATE: turns out I have two accounts. I thought I was signing into the right one. Heather told me about the other one. I tried to sign into that. No password. Tried to sign in using the details. Didn’t work. I needed to contact tech support. Turned out my Zip code had nine digits in Yahoo, and didn’t match cause it was so old (I forgot it). Getting into Yahoo passwords is really hard if you forget all your info. Heheh. Anyway, it’s all connected and I’m into the right account again.

  3. Yeah, happened to me too. I hate it, just migrate to something else. I consider Ringo these days. Something that combines video and photo hosting would be cool, I looked at PhotoBucket but its limits are too low!

  5. I’m wondering what your opinion of Picasa Web Albums would be, in regard to showing photos to people.

    I know that Picasa:Flickr::Apple:Grapefruit, but I admit curiosity as to how you’d percieve the Google offering for image sharing.

  11. I had the same problem a few weeks back. Customer service fixed it for me, but it took a series of e-mails back and forth. They were prompt, though. Answered my first e-mail within a couple of hours, and that was after midnight. (But not on a weekend.)

  15. There’s a lot of problems with Flickr today, depending on which servers you are on. They were doing some updates and improvements and one of the them went slightly wrong. The team are very active in the forum at the moment, chasing down reported issues and giving feedback. And often the quickest way is to email the team.

The technology behind that site can be easily expanded way beyond the specific location/Google Earth stuff they have been doing. I would not be surprised to find that the Spaniards had gotten together with the Picasa guys and were working on a Google (gmail/gcal/gmaps/gapps-integrated) Flickr-killer. It will be tough to compete with Flickr’s community, though…

  23. the same thing happened to me the first time they “merged” the accounts, i was locked out. I emailed someone and they un-merged the accounts. that disaster of an experience was the reason I dreaded merging when they made it mandatory. Fortunately, it hasn’t happened again…yet.

  25. flickr’s working good for me. I’d definitely consider posting in their forums or emailing a more general email address (since it’s like to go to a team) instead of just one person.

  29. Maybe I missed it, as I noticed you specified “good photo sharing service.” What’s wrong with Picasaweb? Besides the smaller community, it seems to have a lot more benefits… no monthly bandwidth caps, better in-browser viewer, tight Picasa integration… I use it myself, but have a Flickr account so I can comment on friends’ photos.

  39. I think you already spoke about that (sorry little bit lazy to search), but why don’t you go for a self-managed website on a mutualized hosting? Then you can put your WordPress blog and a gallery like Coppermine, Gallery2, SimpleViewer,etc. Once it is set properly (ask around for help), you won’t have to put your hands in the mechanic grease anymore.

  41. I gave up on Flickr after their new owners – the *vil empire of Yahoo that helps commies in China to jail freedom speakers – … demanded from me to sign up for Yahoo messenger/account instead of allowing me to use my own email.

I miss the features of Flickr (especially granular access control), but one click publishing from Picasa is sweet and I think the simplicity of the interface is better for simple friends and family photo sharing.     When I login I’m presented with a message that takes up half the size my screen telling me that I’ve run into the limits of a free account and that some of my photos are hidden. Even worse, there doesn’t seem to be any way of turning off this message.

    I now use Picasa, not for any particular reason other than it just works, with no annoying messages.

  65. since I switched the yahoo key and did not use the email account provided [linking parks :)] I have had t.r.o.u.b.l.e but some time ago I was able to sign on
    with the mobile tool but I like to have a quality up on
    my photos the mobile wont give that yet..

I’ve stuck to that pledge and will continue to stick to it. Yahoo’s a mess right now and Semel’s not making it any better. His front line employees are pulling deep and hard on the oars and he’s at the rudder steering them in figure 8’s as they (and everyone else) lose share to Google.

  69. flickr login is working fine for me. And Zoomr seems to be back up – but more buggy than ever at the moment.

    I use flickr as my primary account because it is more stable and my group of family & friends all have their own accounts. Still, zoomr seems to be a good alternative if it ever gets a little more support from some deep pockets….

  71. Yes, Zooomr is up, but expect it to be pretty buggy and service to be spotty, especially for the first 24 hours. Kristopher and I need to get down to the data center and get a couple more servers online to handle the load.

  77. Flickr is working fine for me but didn’t always. They have great tech support (assuming nothing’s broken in their codeware) and people on “z” list blogs like mine get great service. I bet if you send a tech support email, you’ll get an answer.

    Of course, you could just blog it — let us know how long before *they* get in touch with *you* and count your blessings.

    One of the things I like best about Flickr is the groups: it lets you share your shots with like-minded individuals.

    Have you looked at http://Twango.com/? Some friends of mine started it a while back, and the features are pretty good: I’ve just stayed with Flickr mostly through inertia, and for the groups.

    (Note: the Garrett above is not me. Where are all these Garretts coming from all of a sudden?)

  85. Another cheer here for smugmug. I had the same flickr pro problem last week. I was already mildly annoyed about moving to a Yahoo ID, so I looked around and gave smugmug a try.

    For what it’s worth, flickr customer support did eventually fix me up and give me the option to reconnect to a new Yahoo ID or delete, but I’d already fallen in love with smugmug, so I chose delete.

They said, ‘sorry chump but if you don’t remember the 543 pieces of info you used to sign up with, you’ll never have access to your photos again.’ That was it for me. All my personal photos as well as the photos tagged for sharing by others for Blogswana.org are lost, orphaned. I usually use Photobucket anyway for my blog. I’ve given up the notion of a photo sharing service thanks to Flickr.

  97. Robert, I couldn’t agree more with you about Yahoo’s god awful Captchas. I’m not much of a Flickr user, but when I was asked to link my Flickr and Yahoo accounts together, the captcha I got was so ridiculous, I just had to blog it.

    You can see my rant here, along with everyone’s attempt at guessing what the captcha spelt out. We’ll never know what the correct answer was, but it certainly raised everyone’s blood pressure while we tried :S

    Has no one come up with an alternative to captchas? I will love this person forever if it’s an alternative that’s widely adopted! (Assuming it’s better than Captchas!)

  101. I had problems with my Yahoo account earlier this year, but managed to get it going again with support. I use Flickr and prefer a completely online service. That’s why I haven’t made the switch to Picasa yet, even though I would prefer to use Google.

    Robert, you don’t have to use Lifeblog. They inbuilt online sharing service will post photos directly to Flickr or Vox. If you use the S60 application from http://www.shozu.com , you can post to a variety of services, including Picasaweb. It’s relatively easy to set up and easy to use on the fly.

    The killer feature for me is Shozu’s online contact backup feature. Provided you give it permission, it will work in the background to automatically update changes to your phonebook with a copy on the Shozu servers. You can then access it via a web interface or re-sync it with your new phone when you upgrade. Essential stuuff, it’s already saved my bacon on a fusked firmware upgrade.
