Wow, I know Derek Powazek and Heather Champ, co-founders of JPG magazine, and they are writing a story of corporate intrigue on a small startup scale. Truth is that many startups kick their founders out. Heather was even on my show. It makes me sad, though. I liked JPG and certainly could see the love that both Derek and Heather had for it everytime we met. Both of them are great people who I’d love to do things with in the future.

Wow, that’s an incredibly rotten thing to do. Sad. I’m sorry for Derek and Heather, but I’m sure they’ll go on to do more amazing things, hopefully wiser for the experience.
I’m off to cancel my subscription to JPG Magazine (www.jpgmag.com). I subscribed more for the unique community-owned publishing model more than for the photography (which was stellar), but I can’t condone what 8020 did here.
I encourage you all to consider doing the same if you’re a subscriber. Maybe the community can move somewhere that’s not tainted by the actions of 8020 in this situation.

What about Steve Jobs quitting/being shove out of Apple in 1985? People bounce back. I read that story. Problem there is a huge gap in the story as to why it happened. They set up a very emotional story but then leave this huge hole as to why they were pushed out. That’s the story I want to read. And I’d love to hear it from both sides.

True, there’s a huge gap. It’s a sad story no matter what happened. To me JPG was Heather and Derek. They are the ones who first showed it to me and continued to evangelize it, even when we were in Europe together in February.

Do we know the full story here? I know that there has been a wildfire reaction against JPG for everything that Derek wrote, but is it fair? Or are we just siding with the Powazeks because we like them?

Devils: I’ve presented exactly what I know right here. Yes, I do NOT know the full story. And, yes, we ARE siding with the Powazeks because we like them. That’s ALSO what got us interested in JPG in the first place!!! I didn’t hear about JPG from anyone other than Derek and Heather. So, excuse me if I feel sad a bit that they aren’t involved in their own project anymore, no matter WHAT the cause.
It’d be like if I left ScobleShow.com. It’d be a sad day, even if my being an egotistical bbbbaaaaahhhsssssttttaaarrrrdddd caused me to leave involuntarily or something like that. And I’d hope my friends were cheering me onto my next project and mourning my loss. Just like I am with Heather and Derek.

Hmm. I got interested in JPG because of the quality of the work, not because Derek and Heather are great people. I’m certainly no web insider, but Derek and Heather DO seem like great people, and I have no reason to doubt that. And I do wish them well in all of their future ventures.
Divorces are always sad and painful, and the Powazeks have endured a painful loss. But not every divorce is black and white. I just think it’s ugly and sad to see people slagging Paul and tearing down JPG just because two parties did not see eye to eye.

Devils: I agree with that too. Obviously if the work wasn’t good it wouldn’t have spread. But, yeah, when I look at products I look at both the people involved and the product itself. Both are usually mixed up anyway.
