At PodCast hotel today Eric Rice (aka “spin” on Twitter) told me that Jesse Malthus died in a car wreck a couple of days ago. He was a very talented 17 year old who build lots of stuff in Second Life and was well known.
He friended me on Twitter a few weeks ago. That made it a lot more personal to me for some reason. Second Life Insider wrote a memorial to him.
So tragic to lose a life so young and with so much promise.
Jesse was also a libsecondlife developer and Rubyist. At only 17 he was already making great contributions to the development of projects like OpenSim and virtual world technologies as a whole. He laid the groundwork for the first Second Life to IRC bridge and a RESTful Second Life bot platform that will power several projects in the near future.

Baba: the more I learn about Jesse the more depressed I get. It wasn’t a good week, that’s for sure.

I haven’t written about this yet, but will. Jesse was a good pal, in SL and also Twitter. It’s also surreal being the last @ he posted. Re-reading his Tweets puts me between tears and laughter. And standing at his memorial that someone built in Second Life, trying to figure out what to place there, is just, weird and different.
Ironic, the kind of different angle on ‘getting a first life’ since that’s the single thing that makes this hurt so bad.

This is poignant, a friend died in his sleep today at 1.30pm, the difference is that he was in his 70s. I was saddened at his passing and even sadder now at the loss of somone so young and with obviously so much yet to give.

There’s something to be said for the fact that I’m able to read someone’s life leading up until they pass away. I’m not quite sure what that something to be said is… but it’s eerie.
